bmw snowflake rim recall

has anyone else heard of this? i received my monthly copy of bmw on and they where talking about it in there.  going to call my local dealer when they open later today and see if they know more.

Jon, BMW did a recall on a series of wheels from the early 80s, but that was 10-12+ years ago.

just off the phone with the local dealer, the recall was for the 78-80 snowflake rims and it is still in effect. they asked if i would bring my rim in so they can make sure it hasnt already been done, if not they will order a new one. doesnt hurt to ask your local dealer once in a while i guess.

The best I can remember, R65 rims (18 inch) were not involved in the recall. The recall was on 19 inch rims of the larger bikes.

Jeez, I never woulda guessed that same recall was still in effect. I had a friend who got a new wheel for his R100 at least 12 years ago!

You are correct, Bob. The recall only affected 19 inch front wheels. No R65 wheels were involved.   [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Even though the early R65 front Snowflake looks like/is constructed like the recalled 19 incher it doesn't apply.  I do find it interesting that the later 18" Snowflakes were changed to incorporate the extra webbing added to the bigger rims so there must have been some doubt in somebody's mind...

But I still check mine on occasion, just in case! Just got the June issue of BMW MOA magazine, and there is a small piece on the rim recall, with pictures.

Recalls are gov mandated for safety issues & never expire.
My work involves dealing with recalls & campaigns for a vehicle manufacture. Campaigns are voluntary issues the manufacture wants to address. To ensure either:
1. Customers are happy.
2. Customers do not complain enough to seriously damage the manufactures business.

PS: NHTSA has all recalls listed on there web site. Sorted several different ways. I do not beleve they ever purge the database of listings.

And +2 on the 18" wheels were not involved in the recall.

As stated by others, it doesn't include the R65's front wheel.

However, BMW did replace the front wheel on my 1981 R100RT about 2 months ago based on this recall.  They checked the bike's VIN to see if the wheel had been replaced yet, then told me to bring it in.  They swapped the brake disks, re-installed the tire and balanced everything at no cost to me.

I was impressed.  Unfortunately, the rear wheel now looks pretty scruffy in comparison!

Ah, it all becomes clear now.

By replacing your front wheel with a shiny new one, free of charge, the evil geniuses at BMW are forcing their customers to pluck down for a new matching rear wheel too! How can ya roll with 1 shiny rim & 1 25 year-old, scratched up greasy hoop??
From $650 to $1000 too, depending upon where you look. Those dastards!
