Center stand fix?
« on: May 01, 2011, 05:25:21 PM »
We've done some searching and found some threads regarding a fix for the center stand.  Graham's bike goes past 'center' on the stand and makes it tough to put on and off the center stand.  Looks like a favorite fix is to weld some extra material on to keep it from rotating so far.

Any suggestions on how much material needs to be added?  It sure seems like there ought to be a reason for this problem.  Bushings? Stopper?

I can't find #11 (Stopper) on the bike anywhere.

Well I can tell you I welded on too much and spent a long time grinding it back down to fit. If you find my thread I tried to illustrate that the weld needs to be built up in a wedge shape with maybe 3 - 4mm of finished weld at the tip tapering down to nothing at the bottom edge which doesn't contact the stop anyway. All depends on how much wear you have to compensate for.

The hardest part was testing the fit. I must have had the stand on and off a dozen times to get it right. Very worthwhile though as the bike is so much easier to get off the stand.

As for why it needed to be done my bushings were hardly worn. The wear was at the stand contact  points at the tips and I put it down to the laminated construction after all they are just flattened tubes with filler piece in between. The weld repair done well should give an improvement on new and I have found no subsequent wear has taken place. In fact I left a little too much weld on in the expectation that the stand would settle in use but it hasn't so it's probably a little too easy to push mine off the stand than I'd like.

If memory serves... Note the circular clamp bit on the "stopper". Think this clamped to the frame and had a rubber bumper component that kept the centerstand from rattling while in the up position. Perhaps contacted the stand's tang.

Couple R65ers made their own rubber baby buggie bumpers...

Here is how I had mine done.  This is a '79 center stand.
It helped a great deal, but some put the weld at the top - where it contacts the main frame.  I didn't see any bending at that point, so I concentrated on the bottom.  I think my welder welded a piece of flat steel to the bottom and ground a taper.
