Source For Pre Cut OEM Keys?
« on: December 06, 2010, 03:09:24 PM »
I searched a bit and couldn't find a thread covering this, so here's the question.

Can I buy a pre-cut OEM folding key anywhere else but the dealership?

The key I received with the bike is not the folding style and is quite worn. I don't see a good reason to make a copy of an already worn key, so I wonder if it's possible to get one pre-cut.

If I do have to go through the dealership, will I need the bike's title and a photo ID to order a pre-cut key? I know this is necessary at BMW dealerships for cars, but not sure about their policies with bikes...

Thanks,

Ben

I'd contact your local BMW dealership for the details on it .

Don't get a blank folding key, it's made of steel and every shop I've gone to, won't cut a blank key made of steel due to it's being tough on the equipment .

You're only other options are try to get a replacement key made from the one you have, or replace the ignition lock assembly .

Thanks Bob. I called the dealership. They do require proof of ownership (registration or title) showing the VIN as well as a photo ID. It's $11 and change for the non-folding key. They sell the folding key blanks for $10. He recommended a shop a few blocks away to cut them, said they do good work. They have no problem cutting the steel blanks.

He couldn't see any way to order a pre-cut folding key, so his suggestion was to order a pre-cut non folding key for $11, then buy a folding key blank and have it cut from the brand new non-folding key after it arrives.

Sounds easy enough.

I had no idea BMW had records of key codes for our R65's! I have been without a key for a month(lost it) and have been in agony thinking about paying a locksmith $150-$250 to cut a new key for my R65 ignition

I have found at least two locksmiths in my area that had no problem cutting my folding key blanks.

I have NO key to my ignition and the thread said I could go to my BMW dealer and get a PRE CUT key. That means to me that the BMW dealer has records as to what key fits my bike. I was blown away that I could do that, had no idea BMW had records of keys for old R565's

It's Monday and all my local dealers are closed ( do they think they are barbers or something?) I'll check it out in the morning.

My only other option was to get a new ignition at +$100 or have a locksmith make a key for it at +$125

What dealer did you go to???? My local dealer(the only one I could find open on a Monday, Long Beach, CA  BMW) and they stated that BMW has NO records of keys back that far.

Which dealer did you get a PRE-CUT key from? I need to go there!!

The majority of motorcycle shops are closed on Monday, to give their employees a 2-day weekend, due to being open on Saturdays.

Bob, I thought they did that just to piss me off. LOL............. but my original question still needs an answer

' What shop did he visit to get a precut key made?
The BMW dealer I called said there was no way that BMW had key codes for a 1979 motorcycle.

Like barber shops, too. :(

That said, around these parts, I have noticed several motorcycle dealerships opening on Mondays. The soft economy means fewer sales of big ticket items like, well, motorcycles. MC accessory and parts stores seem to be open seven days a week. I bought new boots last Sunday.

First to break the norm was the big H-D dealership in town. Now I'm seeing a few more in the DFW MetroMess following suit. Sell product or shut the doors. I've traded with two shops in the are that are now gone.

Car folks used to say, "What wins on Sunday sells on Monday." Can't sell if the doors are locked.

Motobins has a new ignition lock & keys for $77.64USD

Chicago BMW has it for $79.23 after their 20% discount.

Or you may want to try Temecula Terry in the Trading Post.  If you are lucky he still has the one from the bike he is parting out.

If you end up buying a used switch from wherever, make sure the threads are not too badly banged up.  It is a large diameter fine thread that probably is not easy to find a die for, for chasing.
