Center Stand "Stop"
« on: March 16, 2011, 01:26:06 PM »
Guys, while we're on the subject of "stands", I have a question I've been wanting to post and get some information and feedback on.  I've noticed on my 81 R65 there is no center stand stop. No welded frame or center stand boss or tab to attach a rubber stop (bumper).  My center stand smacks against my mew SS Keihan exhaust system, or used to that is, until I strap-tied a few folds of rubber to the lower left frame rail.  A bit Mickey-Mouse but as a deterrent for abusing a very expensive exhaust system.  The fische calls for a rubber stopper, but there's nothing and nowhere to attach it that I can recognize.  Can someone enlighten me or at the risk of personal abuse - direct me to what I'm missing?

Okay, so I went out and checked both the R65s. Nada. Nothing. Zip. Did not see a hole where a rubber bumper's nipple might plug in, nor a bit of metal rod similar to the lame side-stand rubber bumper idea. I have upgraded the '81 to the superior '83 and up center-stand but my OEM '81 rattled just like yours.

Your ghetto bumper pad is likely the way to go. I like. Who's gonna see it? [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I too, would like to see pictures of an '81 and a '83 side by side.
I was given a later than '79-'80 stand by Randall, but it just came to him in a box along with his bike, so I doubt he knows what year it is from.
All I know for sure is it has the large ribbed flat plate on the left foot for deployment, the tang for putting the stand to the ground is formed sheet metal rather than the solid round steel that I am used to on my early stand.  The right side foot on my new stand is your standard open round hole, waiting for a rubber plug.

You are not alone Mike. I know the stop you mean in the parts fiche but I see no way it could work with my stand. I sort of concluded that there never was a properly engineered stop other than the left hand rubber plug hitting the lower frame tube and not squarely at that. Like you I added a rubber buffer cut from a thick walled rubber hose to the frame tube which helps but the stand still goes up with a clang. Can't see a way to improve things short of fabricating a bracket that would place a stop in the way of the cross tube.

It wouldn't be the only bit of misinformation in the parts fiches would it.

Barry,

That's the other problem, is a clean definitive striking point for a bumper attachment.  I'll try to get a picture of my center stand "ghetto bumper" rig later and post it.  I periodically have to reposition it since it wants to rotate on the arc of the lower left frame tube.  But it at least protects the trebuchet' from damaging the exhaust.  No rattling.  Good for a laugh at least.

Mike, if you have a later center stand with the ribbed foot plate at the end of the left tube, the rubber stopper won't work with the newer stand .

The bikes that came with the later center stand have a bracket welded to the frame, it has a hole in it and the rubber stop snaps into it .

I figured it was something as you mention Bob.  I've searched closely and diligently on the frame and I see no indication of a tab or connection point for the centerstand stop bumper.  Seems like a design or fitment  oversight to me by BMW.  I'm aware of my bike's production date being one of a lot of part application transition.  This fact caused some frustration during my restoration and resulted in a pile of parts that weren't applicable with little indication or accurate direction from the fische.  I only wish I would have discovered this before the frame was powder coated so I could have fabricated something to recieve the center stand.

Oh well...

The rubber plug noted on the parts fiche... might that be one of the two plugs that are pushed into the open ends of the center stand's foot end point?

Rob Valdez sez, "I too, would like to see pictures of an '81 and a '83 side by side..."

Never got any snaps of the crappy '81 center stand foot tang. Mine had a hefty rod with a ball end that was punchin' a hole in my boot's sole. The newer stand has a ribbed and very solid pad for your foot that takes a beatin' and keeps on tickin'.
The newer stand -plus the correct 13-inch Hagon rear shocks rather than the 12.75 inch Progressives I tossed in the trash- made the BMW life so much nicer.

Though it still clangs...
