Well it has happend, the valves have sunk into the heads on both sides(R65LS 1983) , I had no more adjustment so off with her heads.
The exhust vavles are the villan of the show, I got the RHS pipe nut off ok, however the LHS nut wont come off it just spins with the spanner, must have threded it?.
Well Monday I will take them to have new valve seats fitted and to have the exhust nut removed.
Yes I have photos so I will do a write up soon.

what was your mileage when it happened, and do you have the pulse air plumbing in or not?

Sarge, I'm sorry to say that it sounds like you stripped the threads off of your cylinder head, not the pipe nut.  That's something like another hundred bucks to repair around here.

Sarge, You may as well saw off the offending exhaust nut. You can do it or pay to have it done. Most likely the threads on the cylinder head exhaust stub are gerfunken.

Fixing the exhaust stub threads involve building up the ruined threaded area, then cutting new threads for the new exhaust nut. Anti-seize 'em on reassembly.

The valve rework ain't cheap, either. Any possibility of buying a decent used head with good threads? My two cents.

BTW, Some time back, I bought a nice pair of heads for the R65s and stored 'em away for just this future possibility. This stuff happens to many airhead owners...

Hi Joe, nearly got blown off my bike this afternoon, savage spring wind!

I checked my tappets today and the exhaust valve tappets were tight again. I have been monitoring them for about 3 months and it seems that I will also be getting new valve seats before long.
My LS has 94,000 km and the heads have never been off.
I will be seriously considering a new set of piston rings as well. My bike doesn't use any oil but the compression is probably not as high as it could be.

Where abouts in Tas are you and have you decided which machine shop you will get to do the new seats?

Also there are some really neat kits that do away with the finned exhaust nuts. They have stainless steel 1/2 round blocks that clamp onto the stripped part of the head flange and a flange plate that bolts into them to secure the header pipe.
Looks pretty neat in a non-factory way, I thought I saw them on this site but it could have been on the BM Bikes and BM Riders Club forum.

Cheers Bruce

I had to remove the heads on my '81 R65 with 45,000 miles (73,000 km) the exhaust valves had worn to  a knife edge .

When I got the heads back I also requested the return of the valves, the exhaust valve had metal that 'flowed' towards the valve stem .

I guess the official BMW term for this condition is 'valve face plastic deformation' pretty much described what happened to my valves .

Motobins sells them. Not exactly cheap and you'd need a pair of them... if you're a symmetrically balanced individual. ;)

Here's the link for the mod from motorworks site in UK.
I'm in Darwin and took 4 days to receive at about AUD$150.00
I rang a local machinist that does a lot of work for the vintage/classic vehicles here in Darwin, so he does a lot of one offs and specialist stuff, and he told me it would cost a fortune because he would have to make a jig, set it up in a lathe and machine a new thread. When i mentioned the mod, he said do you need an original bike, I said no, he said "buy it".

Hi guys, well I took the heads in (the left one with the pipe still on)
to Donald Gorrange in Hobart (went to school with his son) and they said "no drama mate, will cost about $220 AU per head" ;).
That included redoing the stripped thread :D.
So now I sit and grin too myself, should be ready buy next week, I will update you all and follow up with pics.
