New member wanting to buy R65
« on: September 23, 2010, 09:24:15 PM »
Hello folks. I started riding again after a 20 year break. I started when I was 15 and let off at a little after 30.  I was riding an early 80's Honda 400 then. Now I'm on a 1968 Honda 350 Scrambler.  It's fun and a conversation piece but not much for comfort or cruising. There's an 84 (I think) RS65 for sale in my town for just under 2K. As a vertically challenged individual at 5'4" it looks like my kind of bike. Old, soulful and looks like a motorcycle not an alien bug.
Got any pointers for looking at one of these to buy? The only info in the ad is :BMW R65 (650 cc). Blue. Vetter fairing. Side bags. Good tires. Runs well, quick around town, a great commuter bike.
What should I ask the guy?
Thanks bunches, Edy

Welcome to the forum!

Where about on the planet do you live?   There may be someone on the list nearby who could give you some direct assistance.

If it is a 1984, then it has all of the best improvements that BMW put into these bikes over the production run.  A bike that has been running on the road will generally be a good sign, if it has been sitting in a shed for years then there could be some R&R needed to get it healthy again.

There is a thread on this forum where we've gone over a bunch of the usual stuff to check out- I'll see if I can find it and post a link to it for you.

How mechanically skilled are you?  This will be an important question to answer if it looks like a fair amount of R&R will be necessary on this particular bike, (though if you are riding and mainting a 68 Honda then you're probably mechanically qualified!. Paying a BMW mechanic shop rate to do all this stuff can quickly double your up front investment, if it is needed.

Ask to see any maintenance logs, receipts, etc. for the bike - either private logs by the owner or receipts from the garage.  Check that the odometer /speed are working and original.  Depending on the mileage, some stuff may be due/critical.   Give the steering head bearings, wheel bearings a careful check over.  Ask when the final drive splines and the clutch splines were last cleaned&lubed - if the owner has no paperwork and gives you a blank stare, then prepare to be diving in to do this if you buy the bike.   Bring a digital camera with you to take closeup pictures of things so you can examine them later (or show them to us) - I can never remember exactly how stuff looked 30 minutes after I leave the driveway.

Here are a couple threads to get you started -

Thanks for all the great info. I'll be reading it.
As to my locale, we call it "behind the redwood curtain" since it's kind of remote. Extreme northwestern California to be exact. I do have a friend that's into Beemers but I don't have a contact number for him. I'll just have to wait to see him around. Until that time comes, I thought I would pester you folks.
Thanks again, Edy

Have any friends in North Carolina Edy? See the Trading Post section for one very nice R65/R90/6 conversion that has a few of us drooling.
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

So, you're living in the Humbolt Nation, eh?  You have some incredible riding in your area.
