Metal in transmission oil
« on: June 01, 2010, 09:05:36 PM »
After discovering a nasty transmission oil, badly corroded pushrod and piston bearing brought about by a perforated plastic cover I replaced the worn parts refilled with oil and ran the bike 3 or 4 times for 15 min periods.  Drained the oil and got what I consider large pieces of metal in the magnet.  However, these do not appear to be freshly sheared pieces, but perhaps the remains of the missing bearing race which was not found when removing the external clutch parts.

They appear to be rusted steel more than chrome of stainless and up to 1/8 "" long.  I am thinking of flushing the oil once more and see what happens but I dont have much confidence that this is is bad.  Anyone know soemone with experience with these units in south florida?

The transmission makes a grinding noise from 1st to 2nd unless I am very careful shifting and neutral is hard to find.  Spline job done and just replaced the coathanger wire with one of Justins linkage unit (what a beauty).

Ooh, that doesn't look promising.

I am not famimliar with anyone in Florida, though there may well be someone who is good with these.  There are some places/people along the eastern seaboard, including Anton Largiader - he is often very busy, but if anyone can fix an airhead, he can - and he knows numerous others who he might recommend if he can't fit you in the schedule.   He is in Virginia and here is a link to his website's airhead transmission page - as you can see, he knows his stuff.

He may be a little more expensive than some, but you won't find anyone better, IMO

Fermin,

two places you can check are 441Cycle Shop in Fort Lauderdale. I don't have their number handy but they are near the corner of 441 and davie Blvd. They don't like to work on older airheads but are willing to share their knowledge. You can also call Tom High at Rennsport Motorrad in Deland, FL 386-734-2496. He is an independent BMW shop west of Daytona but he is "The" BMW expert in the southeast in my opinion.
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.
