Guilty of making assumptions

I have lent my R65LS to a mate who needed some transport, and it wasn't running right, wouldn't rev out.
I had fitted a cooking model R65 complete motor to it (same as the LS motor) as the original motor had started to knock at idle, but hadn't run it on the road with the new motor, just started it in the garage.

I had been running two Bosch GT40T coils in parallel (not the done thing some electronic knowledgeable mates told me) and it ran very well.
I had changed it over to a pair of GT40RT coils in series as part of getting it going for my mate, and it had run well, in the garage.

When my mate reported that it wouldn't rev out I made the assumption that the problem was a spark related issue, using the "what did you touch last" rule.

I had been on a trip up the the warmer weather in Brisbane and so as soon as I was home we got stuck into solving the problem.
New ignition module made little difference, as did new plugs and new leads.

Finally decided to look at the carbies, and as part of cleaning the inside of the float bowl, noticed that no main jet was fitted to the LH carbie, soon fixed with a spare jet and washer, still wasn't running as it should, but better.
Popped the RH float bowl off, what a surprise, no main jet their either, strange that you don't notice an absence like that.
The new rider had kicked off the RH float bowl while riding, while I was away, and he had replaced it with a spare from my horde, and hadn't noticed the lack of a jet, and he is an experienced boxer rider.
It wasn't until I went to remove it with an 8 mm spanner that the absence was noted, and corrected.

The bike now revs out like it should, and the new rider is a happy chappy again.

The assumptions I was guilty of were, spark problem in the first place, that one missing main jet wasn't two missing main jets.

Lesson learnt, don't assume.

Thanks for sharing your experience - interesting. I suppose the carbs worked ok on the idle circuits and in the mid range on the needle jets.
Once the needles came up most of the way out of the needle jets (they never come out completely) your lack of mains would be noticed.

Wow, I'd never have expected it to runmuch at all above 2500 RPM without main jets to provide the proper size pathway.
