Air Injection Removal
« on: May 06, 2010, 07:13:32 PM »
Having decided to remove the air injection system from the 1983 R65, I first practiced removing the 10x16 connectors -#7 in the parts diagram- on a spare set of heads scored off eBay.

A few web-based sites I visited warned of potential trouble in unscrewing these parts from the cylinder heads due to their being rusted/corroded in place. I soaked them with PB Blaster and both were easily removed. Same PB Blaster made for an easy exit on the '83 heads.

I have some spare engine drain plugs but discovered all were 18mm thread. Hum...
So before buying new parts, I took the #7 Connectors to my school district's maintenance shop and asked a pretty fair wrench for his ideas on closing off the air passages.

I would likely never have thought of the simple and quick solution this expert came up with. He ran a 1/8"NPT tap into the air passage and then snugged in tight a 1/8"NPT brass hex-head plug. He said, "If you ever wanted to restore the system, just remove the brass plugs". The beveled attach surface for the hard tube plumbing was untouched by the tap.

Taps and brass available at any hardware store. The connectors are already back in the heads and the remaining plumbing is scattered on the shop floor. Rubber timing plugs fit the airbox holes perfectly and vinyl vacuum caps -sometimes sold as screw protectors- close off the Bing vacuum ports.

Monte are you also removing the innards from the air box?.  Will this change performance?.  I was thinking of doing the same to my '82 while I have everything off for the tranny removal.

Air box innards getting the toss, too. My '81 R65 shows no performance loss without the air pump and plumbing. Expecting no change on the '83 either.

It's a lot easier to remove the air box (like for spline lubes) without the plumbing stuff in there.  That's the only reason I removed mine.
