1980 R65 Timing marks?
« on: February 18, 2010, 06:44:54 PM »
What are the idle and advanced marks on the flywheel for a 1980 R65?  at what RPM is the 1980 to be full advanced?

I have my R65 on the bench and did a points adjustment , checked the valves and was going to time it and can't find a reference on the timing marks. I did a search here, went thru my Clymers and Snow Bums site and came up blank for the 1980 R65................ I have a recessed DOT and higher up I have a "10". I assume the dot is the static timing(S) and the 10 is the advanced setting(F).......Jeez , I hate to assume, you know how that usually turns out.

Thanks

Is your avatar a pic of your bike?  I think several of us were looking at it on auction sometime ago and being quite impressed with the paint job.

At Idle, there should be an "S" with a line just above the top of it (sometimes very hard to see).  Idle timing is considered OK if you get that line or the top of the "S" aligned with the line/notch mark on the left side of the inspection hold (it is in the middle, top to bottom) and it stays steady.   If a double image appears, you've either got worn points/advance mechanism or worn timing chain/sprockets.

On the bikes up to 1978, I believe, the Full Advance mark is an "F" and you should have that centered with the line in the timing inspection hole at around 3500 RPM.   On the 79->later bikes, this is a letter "Z", not "F".  Again, RPMs at a steady 3500 RPM should align the "Z" with the timing line mark in the middle of the inspection hole.

The Top Dead Center mark is an "OT", I believe.

Is it possible that you've got a flywheel that is not standard?

I went around the flywheel again and no S or F, just a drilled DOT that was highlighted with white(once upon a time) and the "10" about 3/4 '' up from the DOT.

Yes its the bike in the Ikon but have not had much experience with it, had it for a 1 1/2 years and maybe a 1000 miles. It's been my "go to the store" bike. I bought it for the fairing and will sell the rest. Had it shipped from NY to Ca (ebay).  have a ton in it arrrrgh

The marks are on there.

They are so dirty, they are impossible to see.
It is difficult to clean them, but try an acid brush and some brake cleaner.

I'm not sure what the Z stands for, but the other marks mean:

OT Oben Tot=Top Dead (top dead center)

S Spät=Late (retarded timing)

F Früh=Early (advanced timing)

I always think of S=slow and F=fast, for the engine speed you ought to see them at.

Thanks for the Help Guys..........

The Dot is the static timing, the "10" I was seeing was the "OT" . so I went the other way and started scratching with my flat tip screw driver and under a ((((bunch)))) of crud was that good ol' "Z"  ;D  Tommorw with everything spot on , I can adjust the carbs so it will tick over like a Model A Ford.

A bit late in the day but this what the S mark should look like. The line just visible at the top of the window is the part of the OT mark.

Never too late or too early to learn something. For some reason I looked at the "10" and couldn't translate that into an OT with part of the line missing. Seems like a real "duh" now.
