Neutral switch replacement
« on: December 30, 2009, 01:30:24 PM »
The 83 R65 has always marked its spot while parked. Finally wiggled under the bike and cleaned it up. Gear lube was passing the neautral switch so I put about a quarter-turn or less on it; hoping that might stop the annoying drip. No joy.

Spent some quality time researching a large number of USA vendors for a replacement switch. Prices ran from a low of 33.00USD to 52.00USD. Gag me!

Zipped across the Pond to MotoBins and placed an order for the switch for less than 22.00USD along with the correct crush washer. Royal Air mail has always been quite reasonable with my prior 'Bins bits so I feel like it was a fine deal.

Question. I recall reading - but don't recall where - about replacing the switch. Something about removing a motor mount bolt and spacer? It's awfully tight under the trans and the switch is fairly long.

Who amongst us has done this chore and what tips might you offer?

Gracias y Prospero Ano Nuevo. [smiley=dankk2.gif]

You can place a hydraulic jack under the rear of the engine, remove the rear engine mount stud, then remove the large aluminum spacer .

After removing the spacer, you need to put a bevel on the edges, makes for easier installation .

Also, if you can get dry ice, it helps if you put the spacer in a container of alcohol with the dry ice added and let it sit for a while .

I cleaned up the spacer, and the mating surface on the engine case with crocus cloth, or something similar .

Used a light grease on the spacer for re-assembly .

It's still a pain, perform this with the transmission still installed, but it's less work than removing the transmission .

Monte,

Did you order the 'pattern' switch, or the BMW OEM switch ?

Don't want a /5 switch, either!  They work just the opposite of /6 and on.

Bought the MotoBins "pattern" neutral switch. Looks the same as OEM.

Changed mine a while ago and must have been lucky, found it to be alot easier than was being suggested on different web sites.

Fixed the oil leak I had and the switch then worked.
