Looking for some opinions
« on: October 02, 2009, 11:11:50 PM »
Well I have done it again and now I have a second R65LS. I bought a 1984 R65LS with 60k miles about a year ago. It had been rode hard and put away wet when I found it. It had spent the last 5 years sitting in a barn and believe it or not all I did was change all the fluids, add gasoline and a new battery and rode it 400 miles home and never had a problem since. It came complete with engine guards, Krauser bags, a Russell Daylong saddle and was not missing anything. But it had lived a hard life and I bought it to make a cafe racer for pub hopping and short fun rides. I bought a vintage Piranah fairing to add to the build. See pics 3 and 4.
Today I bought a 1982 R65LS with an actual 9,600 miles that is beautiful but the PO had started to cafe it. See pic 6.

I would like to return one of them to an R65LS and keep the other as a cafe racer. I have enough parts between them to accomplish this as well as a friend who is a factory trained airhead master mechanic.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't forget the band of black paint on the bottom of the tank on the restored bike.

It really bugs me when LS owners paint their bikes but don't do that, in a Mr. Monk kind of way...

Wasn't it in the Jacksonville, Florida area ?

Its actually in central FL about half way between Daytona and Orlando. I've seen it also on Craigslist and eBay for the last year. Price was always too high and it never sold. I get to that area a couple of times a week and I finally caught up with the guy to talk about it. The miles are original. He bought it from the estate of the original owner after it sat untouched in a barn for almost 14 years. Spent the next 3 years as a 'project' and when he was finished he needed the cash. Starts easy, sounds good and runs great. I can't wait to pick it up tomorrow.

Now I have to decide which one gets to stay cafe and which one goes back to stock, the high mileage one or the low mileage one.

I think his original asking price was around $4500 .

A bit much for that bike !!

Great find, and looks like you'll have a great bike in no time .
