Steering Lock
« on: September 04, 2009, 04:06:46 AM »
Why does my steering lock point the front wheel to the right when every other bike in the world (London) seem to lock to the left? The lock works fine, but it can be a pain when trying to fit into tight spaces in parking bays in central London.

Its because you riders in London drive on the wrong side of the road!

OK - seriously - BMW put the lock on the steering stem - if the bars are turned to the left the fork interferes with the access to the lock - if you leave the key in the lock and turn the bars it will break the key. BMW made a key that folds that solves that problem.

Before the era of the /2 the lock was on top of the forks - now on the oilheads it is incorporated with the ignitiion key and can be locked in either left or right position.  I guess it took BMW about 40 years (from /2 to oilhead) to correct the problem. Some things just can't be rushed!!!

Consider yourself lucky that the fork lock actually works!  Monte

Lucky?

I always forget to unlock it and dump the bike in the parking lot.

I quit using it.

I purposely don't wash my bike so it doesn't look like it is worth stealing...

I don't think I've used the steering lock in the last 27 years .

The Rob n' Bob Show... I love it. Where would we be without our vintage R65 owners and their wisdom.

Thanks, guys.[smiley=thumbsup.gif] Monte

Well, I learned something today, that the oilhead steering lock works in either the left or right position .
