Extra Parts
« on: April 11, 2009, 05:33:45 PM »
I've been away in Arizona for awhile but now that I'm back home I've decided to do some work on my '79 R65.

I'm taking the heads and Cylinder off.  The cylinders on both sides are leaking a little oil and so I'm replacing the O rings.  I have one side off and in the process I took apart the valve train.  Inside the housing that holds the rocker arm shaft I found a retaining pin which is about 1/2 inch long.  It was just sitting there loose.  I couldn't see where it belonged so I looked at a parts diagram.  I don't see the part on the diagram.  Does anyone know where this belongs or do I just have an extra free part that someone kindly left for me?

You didn't mention it's diameter but could it be a needle bearing?

Take a look at the rocker arms, and see if the edge of the needle bearing is broken off and missing a needle or two .

Phew!

That's what it is.  Those suckers are just sitting in there.  The only thing holding them together, other than the shaft, is oil.  I've put it back in and all the other bearings are there.  Are they normally loose like that?

How would you go about cleaning those up prior to re-assembly?  If I flush them with varsol there's a huge probability that I'd lose some.

If the raised sheet metal edge that holds them in is broken off, you need to replace the needle bearings themselves.

If all you did was dislodge one upon removal, just use something on the order of petroleum jelly to keep things in their place until reassembly.

Thanks Justin and Bob.

I think the metal edges are ok...I'll check tomorrow and I'll put some grease in there to hold them together.
