O-Rings for brake cam shaft
« on: March 01, 2009, 01:57:09 PM »
In prior posts, mention has been made of gear lube migrating out of the rear hub around the brake cam shaft then leaving its spore where ever you park your bike. Although the fix is a bit labor intensive to get to the two O-rings on the shaft, it's worth the effort.

The bigger issue can be finding BMW's 10mmX2mm O-rings. They are economical, even by BMW pricing, but dealers may not always stock the little buggers. That started my search for an alternative source.

The local Ace Hardware & BMW/VW Supply plumbing department, plus my vernier caliper, provided TLAR replacements for all of $0.29 each. The part number is a LASCO #02-1512. The O-ring is item number 23 in the diagram. Some cam shafts mount a single O-ring while others may take two. Buy extras.

By the Way, TLAR is an old aircraft construction standard. Stands for That Looks About Right.

A very good (and economical) suggestion !
Mine is not leaking now (knock wood), but I'll keep my eyes open for said O-rings to have on hand as spares - its only a matter of time, I 'm sure..
