Louder than normal tick from LH cylinder
« on: June 25, 2024, 03:51:49 PM »
I have an 82 R65LS with 8600 miles. There has been a loud ticking from the Left cylinder. Right seems to have normal airheads sounds on the right but the left is LOUD. Have adjusted valve gap and rocker arm movement to speck with no change. Had heard that making the valve gap too close can sometimes help but, still there. Runs well other wise.

Any thoughts?

It would do no harm to temporarily close the clearances up for the purpose of a brief test but I doubt that's the cause as long as they have been set correctly with the crank in the right position i.e. TDC will have one cylinder with both valves closed and then one revolution of the crank before doing the other side.

Valve Tappet noise is not usually loud even with the wider clearances of 0.006" and 0.010"  provide the rocker arm axle play is not excessive.  The rocker arm play should be close to zero without binding. I think I can just get about get a .0015" feeler gauge in mine.

There are other possibilities like worn valve guides but not at your low miles.
