what other rims can be used?
« on: February 01, 2007, 12:51:33 PM »
i have the standard "snowflake" aluminum rims. what other rims fit our r65's? was there a spoke wheel? a different pattern aluminum rim? is this another one of those it will work with everything except the r65 situations.

I think can build up spoke wheels from parts, at least I saw an illustrated parts catalog with an exploded view, now whether you can still get parts is another story.  But I don't think you can purchase them assembled. The R65LS wheels I think will work, but you need  different brake shoes for the back, I think the drum is a larger diameter. The other bikes that BMW produced during this time were 19 inch wheels, so we're pretty much stuck with the 18 inch stock wheels. I just checked Chicago BMW, and they show a price of $512 for the spoke type front wheel assembly without rotors and $629 for the spoke rear wheel assembly. I'm not sure if they come with wheel bearings installed.

I thought Baffo's R65G/S had spoked wheels, though the front one is something like a 21 inch wheel.

Hey Baffo, what are you doing with the G/S specific parts you've been taking off?....

Steve Hawkins in England built up some wheels for his café R65.

He posts on Boxerworks.  If you go there and search on his name, you can find his email or even details of what he did.

This is his bike:

Yeah my R65G/S is a monoshock with 3 bolts for the rear wheel, 2.50x18 inch and 1.85x21 inch, 40 spokes each with the spokes in the centre of the rim
http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/FicheZoom.asp?image=Diagrams/B0000817.png (the spokes are not really acturatelly drawn in that one)
The later GS wheels are 17 and 21 inch and have the spokes in the sides of the rims and 4 bolt holes
http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/FicheZoom.asp?image=Diagrams/B0000845.png (this is acurate)

Here is mine

And I have not done anything to the wheels just yet, but I will be doing something like this
