Choke valve on carb.

The starting is an issue in the cold weather in London at the mo. I have been meaning to look at the choke situation which I know is not as it should be. At the same time, I want to clean the carbs and check the choke valve gaskets. Can someone tell me which position is correct regarding the teardrop shaped hole and the four small holes inside the choke valve?

Hey BooG,

Be Verwy carefuwl putting this back together.  The shoulder on the shaft that holds the choke disk is easily broken off.  Not very much metal and I think its brass.  

The biggest problem is getting both chokes to fully relax and to pull at the same time so that the same amount of fuel will go to each cylinder.  I made sure there was the same amount of free-play on each choke cable at the carb and then with my fingers on each choke arm on the carb, had my wife slowly open the choke.  Using this tactile approach I made sure that they both started opening at the same time.  The last thing I did was to make sure that both chokes fully opened.  Haven't touched it since.

Of course you are starting with new cables right?

Yeah, the new cables are on already, but I have not got the adjustment correct at the choke lever yet. The cables don't seem to be opening the enrichener the whole way on both sides. As well, the nuts which fasten the cables to the carb have a tendency to bend the cable. Is this correct?

I'm not so sure I'm getting the bending cable bit? The cable ends should run straight at the carb attachment. Picture if possible?

What model R65 is this ? Did the 79/80 R65's have the clamshell airbox and the spring wire choke cables like my '78 R100?

Just wondering if this is what was meant about bending cables?

The "nuts" are lock nuts on the adjustment of the cable free play.  The angle at which the cable aproaches  the carb will make it "bend" just above the adjuster. Everntualy the metal sheath inside the plastic outer cover of the cable will break (this is a design feature).  Of course the cables should have been replaced long before this.  Try routing the cable from above the carb with some loose fitting zip ties.  Maybe you will have better luck in this than I did.  Mine just come off the adjuster at an angle.

Thanks for the snowbum link. Had the carbs off yesterday and set up the chokes as it all says. The bent cable issue was due to the fact that the cable pinch nuts which fasten the choke cable to the lever on the carb were installed wrong, and as such, they were held rigid which meant that the cables bent as the levers lifted. Ordered some new ones from motorworks, and the whole starting issue, coupled with the new battery, has greatly improved. Gonna fine tune today and balance the carbs, and then set about that pesky drain plug on the bevel box!
