Actually the box is tuned and workes quite well.  Modify on your peril.

Well, I was riding to work last night and cough splutter - at around 200km's, my bike started dying. Actually I didn't even get 200, I'm in the 190's......

Fuel clean, carb throats clean, new fuel filter, clean air filter, I'm 30% down on what seems the norm consumption.

This ones got me stumped. Think I might rebuild the carbs for my own satisfaction.

What do your spark plugs look like?  You haven't been buying that E85 have you?   ;)

If you havn't opened the carbs yet, here is another possible problem, the enrichment circuit commonly referred to as the" choke", has a disc with 4 or 5 different diameter holes. These holes allow air to enter the fuel stream, and start to break it up ( emulsify) so it can vaporize better, commonly called the main jet bleed. Now if by chance the holes are plugged, especially the hole that is normally used when the "choke" is off, could explain a decrease in fuel mileage. This circuit is under the square cap that is held on by 4 screws, and has the "choke" cable attached to it.  Also improper adjustment of the " choke" cable may be suspect, especially if you have the 3 cable system with the "splitter" under the tank.

Thanks Bob, thats something to look at.
I'm getting about 12km/l which isn't much better than my V6  family car.

Its getting me down......but

Alright - seem sI have gone some of teh way to sorting out these dramas.
Along with the fuel filter and new fuel hose I have realised something stupid on my behalf.

The enrichment circuit ie useless choke, was not retracting fully. I thought I had checked it several times, but where the old hose around the wire had cracked a little, it was getting snagged easily if bumped.

So, 150kms into this tank, before a ride, I adjusted it. I did 50km in traffic and putning through the twisties. Good fun, hadn't done it on a R65LS, but definitley appreciated the twin brembos.

Anyway, I was on the express way at 110kmh, 5000rpm, when the previous mark of 200km hit. Kept going (should have seen me tucked behing the bikini fairing on my tank bag for streamlining hahah).
I got 255km before reserve, so considering the first 150km may have ben all with the choke on somewhat, we may be back in teh rigth range. Fingers crossed.

It was never spluttering or appearing to run rich so I never checked it that closely - idiot.

Happens to everybody from time-to-time.  Usually the most frustrating issues turn out to be something painfully simple that got overlooked...  Glad you figured it out!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Great news, that you found a minor problem that's easily fixed! May I make the suggestion to change out the cables, they weren't that costly when I finally changed my originals about 3 years ago, I think about $10 US each.

I still kind of like the guy's mod over on Boxerworks.  I forget his name.  I know he has a rat bike, but I haven't seen him post lately.
Anyway, he got rid of the whole mish-mash and installed two large-guage wires on either side with a small loop in the end, and he just manually pulls them up and pushes them down.
But my upgraded handlebar control is still working, so I am not going there, yet.
