New Years Day Ride
« on: January 04, 2008, 12:07:17 AM »
The sun is out and it's not too cold.  The clouds in the sky look like fish scales, or like waves in the sand where a creek has gently moved over it to create concentric bands.  Other clouds are being whipped by the wind into giant feathers in the sky.  You can tell the wind is really moving things around up there in the high altitudes, but down on the road it's calm.

The sun shines down and warms the day, but we are still wearing our warmest riding gear as we head out up the highway past the vineyards with their winter vines in stripes across the  hills.  The hills are green from the new grass on the hills, but the trees are mostly leafless with their branches making lacey patterns reaching up to the sky.  The winter sun is low creating long shadows which makes the hills stand out from the hills behind them.

It's a beautiful day, but instead of working on my bike, my friend and I take off on his K100.  We both need to get out, and luckily I can ride behind him.  Not at all the same as riding my own, but it's better than not going at all.  We head up Hwy 101 north of Healdsburg and when we get to Cloverdale, we head up Hwy 128 towards the coast.  This is a beautiful twisty road with a couple of very deep hairpin turns and the pegs scrape the pavement as we lean into the turns.  He's a much more experienced rider than I am and rides faster.  I always learn a bit more every time I ride with him, and he doesn't have to wait up for me at the next intersection.

We continue heading up into the hills until we come to another road called Mountain House Road and turn to the north.  This is another nice twisty road and there are no cars at all.  We eventually come up on another bike with rider and passenger - looks like a Honda Goldwing.  That passenger has a much more plush seat, but I'll bet it's not as fun!   ;)  They are riding slower and we slow down and follow them into Hopland where we meet up with Hwy 101 again.  Here we stop for a bite to eat.  Then we take off back  home down the highway.  It's been a beautiful day for a ride, especially knowing that some big storms are headed our way and it may be awhile before we get some good riding weather again.

That sounds nice.  It was cold here New Year's Day, right around freezing.  I had company and we had a bonfire New Year's Eve, and a picnic NYD, so no riding even though my favorite riding weather here in the winter is clear and cold.

I did ride to work yesterday, rain rain rain.

Yeah, great ride report from the"pillion point of view", Melena!  Well done!   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I'm hoping to somehow convince Pattimarie  to give passenger riding another shot, since she's aleady said she has no plans to ride on her own bike again (at least for now).  :(  But she has said if she does decide to ride as a passenger again, it will have to be on a larger bike than Britta!  (She rode on back a couple of times after I bought the bike and didn't like it at all.  Bummer.....)   So I guess it will be riding two-up on my R1200C Montana that I hope to acquire later this year!

Oh well, as long as we can still share the riding experience, that's what counts, right?    ;)

Hey Melena, great writeup!  Since we're in the same neck of the weeds,
it might be fun to put a ride together sometime soon.  Nice storm we had
over the weekend too btw!

Anyway, I've had a couple of friends suggest a longish ride including a
possible overnight stay somewhere along the coast.  Hwy 128 out to Fort
Bragg really got me jazzed last time I was out there about a month or so
ago.  You can put together a fantastic loop that weaves its way back to
Willits on Hwy 101.  If that ain't enough twisties for you, you're a sick
individual!  There's also Skaggs Springs Road from Hwy 1 to Healdsburg,
47 miles of insane road, from trials bike tight to 100mph sweepers.  Ahhh,
I'm itchin' to hit it now!!!!

I'll be back on the bike in a couple of weeks & I'll be rarin' to go.  Let me
know if you're interested and maybe we can put something together.

Nice storm?  I guess you guys don't have 4 inches of snow on the ground?   >:(  I actually love snow, I just hate having to go to work on snowy days.  The studded tires are back on the car.  By the end of the week I'm hoping the car tire ruts will be clear enough that I can ride to work again.  I better shut up before the northerners start making fun of me!

Last week my R65 passed 50,000 miles.  Is it broke in yet?

Ed,  Yeah!  Nice storm!    :o   Wind gusts up to 100 mph across some parts of the Bay Area, and drenching rain with flooding in some areas.  Trees down everywhere and power out all over the place.  Didn't last long though, just one day.  But that was long enough.  Sure glad we don't get snow here.  It got our rainfall up to normal finally.  But it was really cold here over New Years too.  It was clear and dry this weekend, but I didn't get out at all.  Darn.

mxwinky,  Yes!  I know all those roads.  Nice.   :)  Just thinking about them makes me want to go.  But Skaggs Spring/Stewart Pt. Rd would be pretty slick this time of year, at least on the narrow part past the bridge.  Hmmm.  I'm thinking about doing it from Healdsburg to Hwy 101.   ;D   We'll have to try to get together in the spring.  I've got some work to do on the bike and will have it out of commission for a bit.  Keep in touch and something will come up.  We'll have to get all the R65's in the area to meet somewhere.  Wouldn't that be a hoot?   ;D

John, I can understand why Pattiemarie wouldn't want to ride on the R65 2up.  Not much room there.  I know I've barely got room enough for me and my gear if I'm going any distance at all.  But, you'll keep the R65 even if you've got an R1200C?  That's pretty exciting, though, to think about getting one of those.  Woo hooo!

Yeah, although I have a feeling that when I do get the R1200C, I won't be riding Britta much.  I don't want her to become neglected like a lot of bikes become when a new bike joins the stable.   I may end up looking for a good home for her to go to.  She's still got some more miles in her, I'm sure of that!   ;)
