TX750-Another Airhead Twin Idea (that did'nt Sell)
« on: June 20, 2009, 11:35:50 AM »
Has anyone ever owned a Yamaha TX750 airhead twin? Made only 1973-74, then they came out with a triple. I have 2 (73 gold well cared for only needed carb clean, the 74 purple just completed a top end rebuild).

Sound really nice and fun to ride. My connection to them: was my 1st bike. They had an initial engine oil cooling design problem that was quickly fixed under warranty but damage was done - dealers couldn't give them away in US.

Tried to attach a pic (but not sure if it worked)

I almost bought a new one back in the day, ended up with a TX500. A good bike but I wish I had got the 750. Haven't seen one in years, I hear once sorted they are pretty good bikes.

You have to click on the "Browse" button next to one of the attachment lines, then browse to and select your pic...

Fastcataz:

My buddy had TX500 when I had my original TX750. We rode them from Michigan to Florida and back w/o incident (ahh-to be 19 again).

The TX750 had an "omni-phase balancer" to eliminate crankshaft vibration that made it a very smooth running engine. However, engine does not like to be beat (red lined), but fine if just cruising.

Actually, the balance system on the TX750 was very similar in principle to that used on BMW's F800 bikes - of course, the technology and implementation was less elegant on the Yamaha, and it was prone to early failures (never had those on a BMW, right ;-)

Anyhow, I had to laugh when the F800 bikes came out and people made a big hurrah about the counterbalanace system - the Japanese been there, done that, 30_ years ago...

Anyhoo nice looking bike you have there!  I never owned one myself, but gave serious consideration to one before a friend talked me out of it and into a different Yamaha.

Great looking bike. Brings back a few memories. My TX500 got to 47K when it was run over by a VW. With me on it... The nice, young (17) girl 's insurance bought me a brand new Z bike. Miss that one too!

I saw one up at Two Wheels Only about three years ago.  Guy drove up from Florida just to get away from it all.  Had a tent and sheet of clear plastic for a ground tarp.

Good looking bike though.

The swingarm is beefy, and a good replacement in an XS650.Some other bits fit the XS650 too.
