Auto Dealership Service Departments !!!!
« on: January 16, 2017, 03:06:30 PM »
I bought a 2014 Hyundai Veloster two years ago from a local dealer .
I got 3 free oil changes, I had the last one done three weeks ago .
I use my motorcycles to commute to work, so the car sits in the garage and is only used for errands on my days off, at best 10 miles, 16 km a week .
I got home from work on Saturday and needed to get some things done, that require the use of the Hyundai .
I pulled the car out and found a puddle of oil on the garage floor about three inches, 8 cm in diameter .
Checked the oil level and it was alright .
Pulled the car out to do my errands today, another puddle of oil was on the floor .
The dealer is only 1 mile, 1.5 km from me, took the car over there and they put it up on a lift and found the oil drain bolt ready to fall off !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:(
The service manager told me that if I hadn't come right to the dealer, that they may very well would have been  replacing the engine in my car .
With the three visits to the dealership, every time I have had a major issue with work not being done properly each time .
This is why I do all the work on my vehicles .
This is the only time a dealer has worked on any of my vehicles, other than warranty work .

Don't get me started on dealer service. sump bung not tightened up, turbo pipe not put on correctly and come off, aircleaner cover not put on correctly and letting air straight in, refusal to use the correct oil in my turbo diesel which has a particulate filter etc.

I'm surprised that the dealer didn't use vacuum extraction to remove the oil, it's what mostly happens these days in the trade. I do it that way on my 5 year old Mercedes C class because the sump plug is not accessible without removing the under tray.

It's always a dilemma between maintaining a service history and the desire to do it yourself and do it right,  If you keep the car long enough, and I usually do, the maintenance history issue on resale tends to diminish and any loss of value is more than offset by what you saved.  It's 20 years since I last had an oil change done by a garage.

The Veloster has a plastic pan under the engine, that requires removal to access the filter .
The first service, they let air out of the four tires, I usually keep it at 35 psi, the following week when I checked them, they were at 27 psi .
Second service, they over serviced the oil by two quarts, a little under two liters, rotated the tires .
I let a few weeks go and rechecked the torque on the wheel retaining bolts, one wheel had the bolts so tight, I needed a long breaker bar and then a cheater bar to get them loosened up, one wheel had the bolts at best half the torque they should have been at .
With this last service, almost lost all the engine oil .
The service manager I talked to, offered a free service visit and I declined the offer .

Would have been a shame if they'd had to buy you a new engine!

My oldest son took his Kia to Wally-World for an oil change and got about 30 miles before every idiot light under the sun came on and everything went up in smoke.  He immediately pulled over and hut off the engine but it was too late.  The car had 6k mils on it and after some fighting between adjusters and a Kia "engineer" it was determined the drain plug was not tightened after the oil-drain.

Wally-World wanted to put a used engine in and we said, "No freaking way!  It's a new car..."  They rented him a car and grudgingly had the dealer order a new engine.  Unfortunately about 6 months later he got T-boned and totaled it.  What the insurance paid for the year old car was less than the cost of the engine replacement!

It would have really sucked if I had ruined the engine, the car only has 5000 miles on it .
And you know that during the engine replacement, something is going to be overlooked and  it would have been my problem a few years down the line .
