American Hero
« on: July 31, 2013, 01:38:14 PM »
Watched a fascinating programme on BBC4 last night titled "Operation Crossbow" an account of the importance of reconnaissance and 3D photographic missions in WW2. The programme featured quite a bit about an American pilot John S Blythe ( the guy had balls of steel) the plane had no weapons and operated at the limits of endurance, if anyone can find it on I player  or U tube well worth a watch.
His mission at La Coupole involved dropping his plane into a quarry to photograph the entrance to this heavily defended site incredible stuff.

Just 2 days ago I watched a similar program on Netflix called "3D Spies of WW2" It originally aired on Nova, a US public broadcasting series. It may even be the same program just retitled for rebroadcast. It sounds like the same one and it was a fascinating program. And I agree, he definitely had steel ones.

Father in laws friend (aged 92) broke his hip a while back he has stories to tell, he did missions as a rear gunner on Lancaster Bombers, life expectancy was low at less than 50% on that gig too.
