I wanted to scream at this guy on eBay, he sold a R65 for a good price but when hear his praise for synthetics........

Oddly enough this bike looks an awful lot like the bike pics from our new UK female member, Girl in a Gale, who indicated that she had just bought her R65...

It could be, i was watching it on eBay but i am unable to contact the buyer i think the price was ramped as the bike was on about a month ago where it got to £1500 and withdrawn just before the end of the auction [smiley=whip.gif] , we will set her straight when she starts posting.

whats wrong with fully synthetic lou??
The origonal seals can soften as they were not designed for it, this if from a thread on the Tech section  just search "synthetic oil" and you will find it.
Also there is a section on the "Classic Bike forum UK" on it.

As far as oil filters go, there have been members here that have removed flattened filters on an oil change  my personal experience with full synthetic oil  ( Mobil 1 motorcycle oil) in my '81 R65, was the rear main seal started leaking within a few months of putting it in the engine .

I replaced the rear main seal and it started leaing about a month or two later, drained the Mobil 1 out, put Spectro 'Golden' oil back in and have not a had a problem since ( 12 years now) .

Yes Mr. E.  There are a few of us "girls" here.     ;)    8-)

I seemed to have missed this other "girl" rider.   I'll take a look and see where she posted.

I'll keep that in mind about synthetics.  I used to use Golden Spectro but after I had the engine rebuilt, my mechanic put in whatever he uses and that's what I've used since.  And I'm sure it's not synthetic.

Most likely will be a "Cheap" synthetic as commercial garages tend to buy in bulk.

Even my 'old' 97 R850 doesn't like synthetic.  Had some nice seepage at the case after maybe 300 miles on the fresh oil.  Dumped that out (and put it into my Rebel.....) and stuck in some plain old Dino oil.  Seems pretty happy now.  :)

Weird how the seepage looks all black, but the oil was still nice and clean when I took it out...

I'd agree with you except he's not a "commercial" garage.  He's just a guy that's worked on BMW's at a BMW dealer and now has his own shop.  He's the kind of person that works a whole lot better by himself rather than for someone else.  He likes to do things his way and he's very particular.   And an excellent mechanic.

Been using Castrol synthetic since the late 90's.  No problems.  I use it in several high milage Toyotas and even an old Briggs L head generator built in 1986.  Keep in mind that most synthetic today is highly processed dino oil.  Shell and Mobil fought over the terminology
in court.  Shell, which developed the process of highly processing mineral  oil until it performs as well as "true synthetics" won.  Google it.  
 Shortly thereafter, Mobile switched to making Mobile 1 the same way.  There may be a grade or two of Mobile 1 which is still true synthetic, perhaps the racing oil.  Bottom line, the new synthetic isn't going to affect seals any differently than "regular" oil.  "Bob is the Oil Guy.com is a site looking at.

Some people like Peas, others Beans..........I use Castrol Classic in the R and Magnatec in the K.
