More War Veterans on this Forum?
« on: September 05, 2008, 01:21:31 PM »
There seem to be a possibility of more than one war veteran who are part of this forum.

For what it is worth - as National Serviceman, I was also involved in militatry operations (1976 - 1981) during the South African Border War - which took place in Namibia and Angola.

More information about this war can be found at:

http://en.wikpedia.org/wiki/South_African_Border_War

Today I am just glad to be alive, and to enjoy life without any bad feelings towards our formal enemies..........

Your link doesn't work for me.  I avoided service because our military rejects blind people.  OK, I'm not blind, but they wouldn't take me with my really bad myopia.  It's just as well, as I don't see how I ever would have fitted in the military.  I actually like violence but I won't be told what to do.

I think an i in Wikipedia is missing.

Try "Googling" for South African Border War and I'll bet you find more information than you want.

Sorry, Melena is correct - the link is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_African_Border_War

Having done a Google Search just now myself, I discovered that  some or other fantacy is doing the rounds on the internet - a so called "defeat" of the South African soldiers at the Battle of Quito Carnevale........what a sick joke !

The figures of the losses at Quito Carnevale  (Wikipedia link) speaks for itself.........and  the truth is, that a political settlement has been reached at that stage of the war - South Africa started withdrawing from Angola and Namibia, and Cuba started withdrawing from Angola.

Anyway, I do not have any attention to start the war all over again.........

I dont post here much, but I do lurk and have an R65 that needs help.  Someday I'll get to it =)

US Navy - '94 to 2000 - USS Albuquerque (SSN706) - Reactor Controls division.  good times always =)

2000-present - Ohio Air National Guard - Ground Radio.  Incl. one 4mo trip to Iraq.  Even more good times.

I have 4 more years until I hit 20 (retirement), after that, I'll see how much longer I choose to stay (drawdowns are forcing out a lot of 20+yr .mil members)

No Lou, I have not seen the guy before.

Angola is a beautiful country and I still hope to tour the country in future. There are still many landmines all over the place, but times have changed and many new roads are under construction.

Air force during the viet nam war.
The air force had a nice policy,we waved goodbye to the officers flying off on combat missions and went to the club for happy hour.
