Bureaucrats Gone Wild?
« on: February 26, 2009, 12:44:25 PM »
There was a story in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, or as we so affectionally refer to it "the Startlegram", about how the Consumer Product Safety Commission has put a moratorium on all motorcycle and ATV sales for the youth market.  Their concern is the potential for lead content in these products.

http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_action=doc&p_docid=12691A47A348A760&p_docnum=1

While I certainly recognize that lead is a very toxic element and has the potential for damage to health, but I find this to be just another example of "Bureaucrats Gone Wild".  It's preposterous to assume that children under the age of 12 are going to put a motorcycle or ATV in their mouth.

At issue is the future of our sport and pasttime.  According to the article approximately 25% of motorcycle sales today are the mini-motocross bikes.  These little guys are going to learn to ride and hopefully will perpetuate the sport in the decades to come.  Moreover, eliminating the sale of the smaller bikes will create a hardship for some dealers, and I rather doubt that they will be given a government bailout.

I'd like to hear what the rest of the world thinks about this restriction.  Thanks for reading.  -Bengt

With the likelihood of the current administration pandering even more to the enviro-wackos and assorted reactionary groups we can probably look forward to more and more preposterous schemes being hatched up in DC.

The link is broken to the article, though, something about a search session and cookie being expired...

Seems the ban is not aimed at motorcycles specifically but rather motorcycle sales have been drawn in to a Lead content ruling. Remember all those Chinese toys made with lead paint? Also means no fishing weights for the pre teens as well I s'pose. I'm sure this will get sorted out.

Joseph Martyak, the acting director of the The Consumer Product Safety Commissions Office of Information and Public Affairs does seem to have his head up his butt.

I'm all for getting kids started early in training on bikes and stuff, but if they are still in the teething stage I think that is pushing things too far !

Unfortunately I have a hate/hate relationship with these little Minimoto's.  And also trail bikes ridden by youths in residential areas.

In the UK they are generally bought by parents who have no idea where their youngsters are going ride them.  They do absolutely no investigation into the legal situation, and they are often of the cheapest and most dubious quality.

They are not road legal and therefore cannot be ridden on the road or the footpaths.  Niether are the riders generally old enough to hold any sort of licence.

People generally do not own enough land to allow their kids to ride them on their own property.  And there are places where they can be ridden legally, but it often costs and since the parents are generally the type that could not be arsed to look into the pros and cons of owning one of these bikes responsibly in the first place, they are hardly likely to take their kids somewhere to ride legally.

Therefore we get the little blighters on any patch of green in residential areas, making an unbeleivable din for hours at a time.  One bike and a queue of 12 kids, riding illegally (and they and their parents know it).

They are a public nuisance and a danger to themselves and others.  the older they get, the bigger/noisier the bikes and the faster they go.

When asked as to why they are riding illegally the answer is always the same - "where am I/he/little jimmy suppose to ride it?"

Well I don't bloody care, you should have thought about it before you bought the bloody thing!  It is your problem not mine.

I let them know that I have rung the local Police and if I am lucky they might turn up 3 hours later when they are sure the fuel has run out and then ask where the bikes are!

I have next summer to look forward to, where I cannot sit in my own back yard on a sunny afternoon and relax, because all I can hear is the constant drone of a 2 stroke motor.

Rant over >:(

You have my sympathy Steve.
And I think, Joe Public sometimes, sub-consciuously, associates their attitude with that of real motorcyclists. Aaaaargh!
