Sirius radio...satellite radio
« on: December 06, 2008, 07:41:16 PM »
I just down sized from my 11 year old Ford Explorer to a new Ford Focus. It has a Sirius radio........the satellite radio This is my first experience with satellite radio. The radio will suddenly cut out for a second....... three seconds at most....did this 6...maybe....7 times on a 45 mile trip. Is this normal? Do any of you have one that does this? I talked to a .....”Radio expert”..at Best  Buy who said this was normal..the radio simply lost the satellite signal for a second or so. Is she correct or do I have a radio with a problem? I sure have enjoyed the radio.....love the no ads......not much talking aspect. But just wonder about it cutting out.

Scotty,
I've got Sirius in 3 vehicles so here's the dope. The receiver should just about NEVER loose the signal unless: Traveling in a tunnel or under a large overpass may temporary block the signal. Traveling on a below ground level roadway bordered by tall buildings [Cross Bronx Expressway] lower Deck of a Bridge [George Washington Bridge in NYC], The antenna is not mounted clear of obstructions on the vehicle, it belongs out on the body of the car at least 18" from any pillars, spoilers or fins! Yer in Tejas so as long as you have an unobstructed line to the north from the antenna the signal should not be blocked. I've got 1 place here in Feenix that cuts the signal for a second or two.

I have had Sirius for over 3 years now. As Rich has said it will loose the signal also around trees. I have lost the signal out in the middle of no where a few times. I have shorten my antenna to be only abour 2 feet so I do not have to run it out the car when I move between vehicles. I have not been able to tell an difference it up in front on the dash or on top of the car. I even put next to the windshield on my 1959 Triumph TR3 that has very little slope to the windshield and do not have a problem with lose of signal.
