A family trip trough New England...
« on: February 08, 2008, 07:40:14 AM »
Hi everyone!

My name is Luigi and I’m from Rome-Italy, I’m 42. I’m a new member of this community!
My wife and I have 4 kids (age 12, 11, 5, 5 - twnis!). Next summer we will spend a month in the USA. We will visit New England states + Niagara NY and we are planning our trip trough these states.

Is there anyone that can suggest me some place to visit with kids, or somethings we absolute should do with them?

Hoping you will help me, I send you best regards from Rome!
Luigi

If you had the time it would be nice if you could get out of New England and see how the rest of the country lives!

Don't worry about what Justin said.  New England is beautiful, and there is much to do.  You would have to stay here a couple of years to see the whole country!

We have some members that live there.  They will be chiming in soon, no doubt!

What I meant was that New England is not necessarily representative of the rest of the country, but it does have some nice scenery in places.  Head just a bit south and experience some good Southern Hospitality! ;-)

Hi Luigi !

Yes, it can be very beautiful up in this part of the country during the summertime.
There are many things to do, and depending on your preferences/interests, some things
are very easy to get to.   If you are interested in early American history, there are many
places in Massachusetts near Boston to visit, all relating to early American history: Plimouth Plantation,
Freedom Trail, etc. as well as some "urban" activities such as baseball games at Fenway park (Boston Red Sox)
or Museum of Science and Aquarium, or you can go out for the day on a large boat and watch various species of
whales (depending on time of year, you will see more or less whales, and a variety of species like gray, Minke, Finback,
Orca, porpoise, humpback... they feed&migrate at differing times of the season).  You simply must eat lobster and corn on
the cob and steamed clams - you can get these almost anywhere in New England area but everyone claims that these are
best eaten from simple, small roadside restaurants you find along the coast in the state of Maine - particularly those in which you
can see the lobster boat docked right behind the building, which may be very simple, with basic wooden picnic tables for seating.

In northern New Hampshire we have a large national and state park, and in this park is Mount Washington - I used to think that it
was the tallest mountain in the United States east of the Mississippi river, but I have learned that there is (1) mountain in North Carolina
and (1) mountain in Tennessee which are slightly taller by approximately 100 metres. On Mount Washington the highest recorded sustained wind speed
on the planet has been measured of 231 MPH, though the weather should be much nicer during the summer months.   And, if you like, on Mount Washington one can hike
to the top (a VERY strenuous, day-long activity) or you can drive up a road to the top, or one can take an old fashioned steam-train
(called the "Cog Railway" as the steam engines have geared wheels that engage the "teeth" of a track so that it has the necessary friction to
climb the very steep incline of the mountain.  This is expensive, but quite rare, and they have been operating such steam engines
and passenger cars on this special railway for approximately 140 years !!

There are many other sorts of things to see and do in this area of the country - depending on what your interests are I can suggest other types
of places to visit or see from white water river rafting to the Corning Glass museum in Corning, New York or the baseball hall of fame and museum in
Cooperstown.   Depending on when you are visiting, I may be able to help you or take you to see some of these things.  However, since my wife is a school
teacher we often end up having to make all of our own travel plans during the summer season as well. Let us know when you have your plans prepared and
we will see if we can help out.

Ciao !
