'79 Paint Colour Again
« on: July 19, 2008, 02:24:16 PM »
Awhile ago I asked if anyone knew the paint code for the Red '79.  The responses pointed me to a website that has lots of colours and paint schemes, but no colours for the '79.

I'm really not sure what colour this bike was originally but I'm guessing it was red as it has about 3 different shades of red at the present.  This fall I hope to repaint it, but because I have collector plates on it I want to stay as close to an original colour that I can.  Does anyone know of a red colour (GM, FORD. Chrysler, whatever) that is close to an original '79 red?  What about other colours....I guess I don't have to stick to red.

for 81 there were three different reds.
a light, med & bright.
Henna & Canyon were med & bright.
The Canyon looks like the red they used on the cars & it's my fav.
Go to OEM & plug in your VIN, then look at the painted parts in the fische.
It will give you a name & that can be further researched.
Have you looked under the tank & seat for the codes?

I'm looking at my parts book:

hellrot met. ("light red"*) w/gold pinstripe  -  #551

canyon red w/white ps  -  #518

Maybe that helps?

With the BMW paint codes you should be able to go to a Glasurit dealer and get it matched right up.

According to my "Airheads from /5" history book, the R65 in 1979 was available in
silber (548)
and
orangemetallic (551)  braune Bank

and for the 1980 model year, they claim , the (in)famous bronco-brown,
"bronco-anthrazitmetallic (589) (braune Bank)
was added.

I think that these were European market colors though - as Rob's I think was bronco-brown and a '79, correct ?

Thanks nhmaf.  This bike was originally a European bike so those numbers may apply.  The orange metallic sounds interesting.  I'll have to see if I can find a cross reference to some paints available here in Canada.

Msbuck I went to the Glasurit website.  They have a great search machine.  I found all the BMW motorcycle colours for '79.  Hopefully I can get a local paint supplier to match one of the colours.

Is this the website you went to? http://www.glasurit.com/

I could not find anything about motorcycles, there.

Rob if you go to that website and work your way through to here:
http://www.glasurit.com/COLOR/new-color-online/m1frameset.php?language=1
Select BMW as the manufacturer and then select Motorcycle under model.

I had to play on the site before I found this.
