Hello!

Hello

My Name is Huw and I have just got a 1982 R65ls and was hoping some people here might be able to answer a few questions.

I Have yet to take it on a proper ride although have been tootling around the farm trails and fields around the house.

It seems overall in good condition although a couple of things have caught my attention,

It does not like to idle until fully warmed up, I think this is due to the fact that it is missing the plastic choke splitter so currently only one choke is working.

it does not seem to like revving past 4000 rpm, it seems to reach 4000 then stop accelerating. the only way to get past this is to back off the revs and increase them very slowly with gentle throttle input.

there appears to be a leak in a gasket or valve as air escapes out of the top between the left cylinder and head making a slight hissing sound. there is also a very fine deposit of oil around this area.

The handling seems a little boat like, I'm used to riding a Kawasaki AR125 so could be to be expected. Its had brand new original spec shocks and tyres fitted less than 100 miles ago so I guess i'll have to get used to it or think about upgrading those.

Other than that it seems pretty mint with 28000 miles on the clock.

I'll try and get some better photos up later but these are from the listing

Hello........ the Joys of riding a "Cow" ......  [smiley=cowsleep.gif] welcome to the herd.
Sounds like you need to overhaul the carbs, you can get a kit with diaphragms o rings and jets , may help to ultrasonically clean them if you can, put your questions up in the Tech section where you will get plenty of help.

That's just the nature of the beast. It's not a bike you can start up and leave idling while you put your gloves on.  It should idle without assistance at a little below normal revs after a couple of miles but but not reach full idle revs for typically 5 miles or more.

What kind of fairing is that?  The two headlights look good to me.

I found a sport bike dual headlight unit by the side of the road on my way to work a couple of weeks ago.  It was still there on my way home so I stopped and stuck it in a saddlebag.  It's a little too wide to fit in the headlight opening on my Windjammer but I wonder if I could widen the opening.  Better light than the stock Windjammer sealed beam 7" bulb, I bet.

Thanks for the help,

I am not sure about the fairing although I do prefer it to the original, I'm thinking about going to a single bowl light with no fairing. As for the make I'll see if there are any marks on it but it was fitted long before I got it.

At the moment I've got 6 other project vehicles. So rebuilding the carbs is not high on my priorities although i might see if I can get them set up better.

Welcome aboard, Huw. Nice looking modified LS you have.

At first blush, regarding the engine not wanting to rev beyond 4K, I'd be looking at the CV carb's diaphragms. The slightest pin hole or tear in the thin rubber will often reveal itself with the poor performance you've noted. Always use OEM Bing diaphragms. Cheaper repops are available but they fail to provide quality performance.

If only one enrichener circuit is funtional, there's no wonder the engine doesn't want to play nice until it's fully warmed. At least you already know what the fix is.

"there appears to be a leak in a gasket or valve as air escapes out of the top between the left cylinder and head making a slight hissing sound. there is also a very fine deposit of oil around this area."
Could be a failing head gasket. The oil would be another clue. Perhaps check valve clearances and cautiously re-torque the cylinder studs; pulled studs are not uncommon and are a PITA to repair.

Riding farm trails and fields on an R65LS really won't provide a fair test of the bikes handling. Remember, you have an LS rather than a GS. ::)

The lower shaped portion of your fairing looks just like the Maier that's on my '81 R65 but with a single headlight.
