Now I get it!

I picked up my 82 R65 a few months back from a 72 year old gent.  Beautiful bike, little over 9,000 miles on it, but the bike had not been ridden much.  Compression at 70psi, timing off and basically ran poorly.  I put a little over 400 miles on it in an effort to seat the rings.  Finally gave up and had the piston rings replaced.  Just came back from a 125 mile break in run.  Wow, now that is why I began riding motorcycles.  I can't stop grinning.  I feel like a kid on Christmas morning.

I wonder if '82 was a bad year for rings.  I had to replace the rings on the "Dawg" when I was bringing it back to life.  It was the first BMW engine I've ever had to re-ring!

I had pretty fair compression but after running for about 2 minutes it killed every skeeter on the block!  The oil rings had about .025" end-gap...
