How many Orange R65LS's are out there?
« on: December 17, 2010, 09:40:52 AM »
Hope everyone is ready for Christmas! I'm going to see an Orange LS today for sale. It's Orange! I've never seen one and the owner tells me it's original. Is this true?  :o

The LS version came out of the factory in red or silver on the fender, tank and rear tailpiece .

With either white or silver wheels .

This one has the white wheels but the tank & tailpiece are Orange. I noticed the tank does not have the black area near the bottom either, Hmmmmm ::)

I've never seen an orange one.  They look great in bright yellow though.

The factory red could be misconstrued as orange, but if it doesn't have the black panels on the tank, I would say it has been painted.

Are the sidecovers black, or color matched?  I think most were black, but I could be wrong on that.

If the inside of the tank is good, and it has a clean original exhaust and all of the fragile bits of the fairing are there and in good shape, (and it runs well) and the price is right for you - go for it!

The 'orange' is really a Henna red. That's what the original colour is referred to as in the BMW brochures of the day. It can fade over the years but I have been told by an artist that henna red, because of the  red/orange pigment, doesn't not fade nearly as badly as other reds. It sure polishes up nicely that henna red! I have compared LRB's henna red with near new LS red parts...extra passenger hand holds....and fading was not noticeable at all! Mmmmm...with white wheels it is pure joy to just stare at it!  Enjoy!!!!
Black side covers were the norm. And as was mentioned the black bottom on the gas tank for that sleeker look 8-)
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".
