Shift kit

Here's another question I've been thinking about.  How can you tell if the shift kit has been installed in your gearbox?  My bike has an unknown service history ('81 R65) and occasionally I get a false neutral when shifting into fifth, but I've learned to maintain upward pressure until I feel it go all the way in before releasing.  Is there an external mark or can you look through the fill plug and see the cams and tell if the newer type are there?  I have a borescope, could I use it somehow to tell?

I think the actual upgrade year was'83 or thereabouts. You may get a borescope into the filler hole, but the only indication is a fairly pronounced hills on the detent cam, the older ones are slightly flattened on the top.
All that said though, the later shifter still is prone to some false neutrals and It's mainly a technique thing to get them clean.
