R65LS Top Case..?
« on: June 11, 2008, 04:32:51 PM »
Apologies if the answer lies somewhere on the Forum ..but I promise I did take a good look first!
I would love a top box( top case?) on the R65LS ( 1984 vintage ) The good folks at Siebenrock say the only way is to change the seat and tail end for regular R65 parts....however this would be very expensive at new prices and I wonder if anyone knows any alternative...other than watching out for used parts....and....would there be a down side to changing over..?
Thanks in advance

Nice looking red LS !
There are a few more of us red LS riders than silver LS riders in the forum - we gotta stay ahead !!
 ;)

I think that you're outta luck with respect to the topcase for an LS - those fancy, flimsy, plastic grab handles
and the long tail cowl that make it look so sexy also make it very rebellios as far as fitting any type of production
luggage rack on the back.   If you are patient and lucky, you can find a regular 81-84 vintage R65 seat and
rear cowling that could be swapped out, and then you could use a number of off the shelf tail racks, including
Reynolds.   But, as was pointed out, this could still be a bit pricey undertaking unless you are patient and
shop around.  Though, since you'd have to repaint the regular R65 cowl to match anyhow you wouldn't need to get
a pristine one.   IF you go this route, DO NOT LOSE YOUR ORIGINAL LS seat and cowl as they will add more value to
your LS (if you care).    Also, the little tail-end cubby space in the LS will not quite fit with the regular R65 rear cowling
(I think) so you lose a bit of underseat storage space.

Welcome aboard !!!

Thanks for that....and for the welcome. I have used a superb local mechanic for all my bikes since I moved into a  home with no garage/workshop or even access to the garden/yard.....and my ancient knees have had enough of kneeling beside the road working on bikes! Shaun at Downham Market thinks he has figured a way to fit at least a backrest of some kind as Kate feels she's going to fly off the back of the bike after years of travelling on an MZ ETZ250 !
