Below is a picture of my 1983 R65.

I acquired the bike a year ago October from the family of a friend who passed away a couple of years before. This was his favorite bike. Along with the bike I assumed a large file of service records and his original purchase documents. He purchased the bike used with about 41,000 miles on it. There were 110300 when I brought it home and I put about 2200 miles on it last summer.

Despite appearances, this is not an LS, someone went to the trouble and expense of the conversion. The paint color is Avus black and there is a double pinstripe, white/deep red on the tank seat cowl.

The bike is in the shop as I write this getting the transmission rebuilt, bearing and seals, and fork seals. When the bike gets home, I'll do a top end reseal, a valve job and new rings. Friends are lobbying for me to do a Siebenrock big bore kit. Doubt this will happen.

The bike is a great rider and I took it on a several multi hundred mile days and it performed wonderfully. Mulling over riding it to the AMA vintage days in July and/or to the Barber in September.

Often wonder why the LS only came in red and silver; that black is exquisite!

 Very Nice bike
Just wondering how familiar you are with the issues that this era of BWM's have

You say you are going to do a "valve job"
Why do you think you need one?
A proper one can cost as much as $1000 USD

Have you checked the valve lash lately on it and is it closing more up than .002 inches in 5000 miles
If not I would not do a valve job on it
Just decarbon and seal it up

With the milage it has on it their is a good chance it has already had the EX valve seat replaced

The valve covers can be difficult to reseal if the top of the head is warped
The use of a silicone valve cover gasket can remedy that or surface the top of the head when it is off

If your   not  familiar with them please save your self as much grief  :'( as possible and ask lots of questions on any thing you do

We are happy to help  :)

I need to do a top end reseal as the push road seals are a weeping mess. Compression and leak down is just out of spec and since the heads will be off anyway and with 112,500 miles on the bike doing the valves and while I'm there piston rings, is maintenance.

If the push rod seals weren't leaking, I'd just let it go, but since I'm there... Since I'll be doing the work, it will be parts and some machine shop time.

Besides, I'm retired and need a winter project.

Look at the edge of the exhaust valves.  If you can almost shave with them it's time for new ones!
