Motor Gasket Sets
« on: April 26, 2008, 09:59:13 AM »
I have numerous places on my '79 R65 where oils appears to be seeping out.  So one of these days I will take things apart and replace some gaskets and torque everything to specs.  It seems to me that I saw somewhere that there was an aftermarket silicone gasket set available that was supposed to be wonderful for sealing things up.  Now I can't find it!

Can anyone tell me where I will find these gaskets or if you have any other suggestions re gaskets for the engine.

Mike

Oil leaks can be deceiving. I tracked one down to the shifter and popped in a new seal, no more leak. Push rod tubes, oil pressure sensors or the dreaded oil pump cover / rear main http://suraklyn.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1206541692 are all suspect after years of use. Clean everything up first and watch for the origin. Silicone gaskets get mixed reviews. I only use them on the valve covers. Everywhere else gets OEM gaskets.

I put the red rubber gasket on the valve covers, and it worked well for about 6 years, then it got into a 'gel' state and expanded a bit.

I don't think I would use another of this type again, I'll go back to the paper OEM gasket.

Ever since I had my heads rebuilt (by Bob Grauer, SF Cali), I have not had a problem with oil leaking at the valve cover.  I don't know how long it has been.  He MUST have trued them up, even though he did not mention doing it in his labor charges...

I am very happy with my OEM valve cover gaskets, now.  Before I had two gaskets on the left side.  That is a sometimes successful fix.

I don't know how much my sump is leaking, if at all, but the bottom of my engine is a mess.  I couldn't imagine getting it clean without pulling the engine.  I replaced my push rod tube seals when I had my heads rebuilt last fall.
