Reminds me of one of my neighbors long ago - he was an older guy and very mechanically UN-inclined-but at the time we had no idea just how clueless he was.  He had noted that his car's temperature guage was running a bit high, and had asked us what to do - we said, check the coolant level and if it seems low, add some water to it.   We didn't expect that he would interpret the little oil can symbol with the drop of oil coming out its tip to be a water can symbol (his claim) - he filled that engine up until water was  up to the top.  Later that afternoon he went to start the engine..  OF course, THEN he came over to get us to investigate why the engine wouldn't start.

Reminds me of my brother and sister-in-law...

I was visiting them one time and my sister-in-law came home from work and said to my brother "John the oil can light is on in my car again...it's time to change the oil."  My brother replied "OK I'll take it in on the weekend."  I asked if they ever checked the oil level...No!  So then I explained to them the real meaning of the oil light and why it was necessary to check the oil level and keep track of mileage and when oil changes should occur.  I'm sure all of this went in one ear and out the other.  The surprising end to this story is that my brother just traded this car in.  It was a Honda and it was 19 years old and they had never had problems with it!

Another story:  A few years ago a friend of mine and I were riding up in the Gaspe peninsula in Quebec.  We met another rider who was riding with his girl friend.  He asked if he could join us because he did not speak any French.  We said yes.  The next day, late in the afternoon, he pulled over.  He had a steering wobble.  I looked at his front tire and it had delaminated.  I asked him how much pressure was in his tire and when he had last checked it.  His response was that he had had the bike in for service the previous fall (9 months ago) and that he assumed the dealer had checked it and filled it.  I checked his pressure.  He had 20 lbs in both tires which should have had around 40 lbs.

May be we should be thankful to those out there who take it upon themselves to test the limits!

greetings from a white and cold north (the third most coldest December since 1870!)
