Interchangeability of R65 and R75 parts ???
« on: March 27, 2008, 03:30:43 PM »
There are currently turn signals and a throttle assembly for an R75 listed on Ebay. Will these work on an R65? Someone told me they think both the fork tubes and handlebars are of smaller diameter or the master cylinder is in a different place on an R65.
If the above is true, what other common R75 parts won't work on an R65, or is the list too long to even consider ?
New R65 owner.
Thanks in advance.

Turnsignals - if they are the black plastic, they should work.  If they are the aluminum silver, I don't know.
I assume you are talking about just the turn signals, and not the stalks that they mount to.
The stalks from a R75 will not fit an R65.
The R65 has a front panel mounted to the upper and lower triple clamps that has mounts for the headlight, instruments, and turnsignals.
On the R75, the turnsignal stalks come out of a circle-mount that fits around the fork leg.

Throttle assembly - if it is from a R75, it is probably not set up for a master cylinder on the handlebar.  Also, the gears on the throttle do wear over time/mileage.  Something to consider.

The list of differences IS very large.

There are quite a few R65 specific parts, but there are some compatible parts with the same year larger bikes.

Unless you have the parts to compare with, it's a guess at best.

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

The only thing I can add is that all "Airhead" handlebars are the same diameter, AFAIK...  But Rob is correct, unless it was a retrofit I don't think any R75 came with a handlebar mounted MC.

As noted there are very few parts that will interchange between the R65 and the R75. Wiring to the brake and clutch perches is different and the location of the brake master cylinder is different. My R75/6 has points and the R65 the bean can electronic ignition. the alternators MAY be interchangable and the valve covers are although they look different. Starters have 8 and 9 teeth so don't interchange nor do the clutch carrier / flywheel. Tail lights are different as are the headlights. Forget about the seats and tanks or the rack and saddle bag mounts. I've have been told that the transmission will interchange although the gear ratios are different and the cases look different. I'm not sure about the final drive because the rear brake shoes are different. Front wheels are 18" vs 19". Even the turn signal internals are different in the way the wires terminate.
