maybe y'all will understand

I was going through the local CL yesterday when I came across a '75 r75/6 that looked to be in good shape for $750. It had high miles (89,000) but I got the feeling from the add and the pics that it was well cared for. Of course you never know until you see it.
the add was probably minutes old, but those old airheads are so sought after, that at that price I was sure it was spoken for. I emailed the guy and got a response back that seemed pretty clear that I was first in line.
We made arrangements for me to see it in the morn' (today). I can't afford two bikes, and lord knows I hardly have enough time to keep my Frankenbeemer on the road, but man, that seems like a good price for that bike. I decided that I'd buy it, clean it up, and then flip it and make some money. But I couldn't shake the feelin' that I'd feel like a jerk posting that bike a few days after I bought it asking for twice the money that I'd payed for it. (I really couldn't have kept it or sat on it for a while, because I've got a major house project going on and I don't have the space and I would have had to borrow money from the house project fund to purchase it)
I woke up this morning and emailed the guy and told him that I was going to pass. I think i did the right thing, but man, I've been thinking about that bike all day! No real point to all of this, just felt like sharing with folks who might understand.

You most likely did the right thing, i-man. But I have an idea for you...

In my shop, I have a small wooden box with a brass-rimmed coin slot in the top. The front of the box has a door from an old Post Office letter box with only a two-digit code. You know it's old.

Inside the box and under the slot is an old coffee cup. Any evening that I have loose change in my pocket, I "mail it". Last time I emptied the mail, there was $60.00+. That's my "happy money".

Go get yourself an old coffee cup, i-man. Do something with it that makes it inconvenient for you to rob yourownself. That's gonna be your savings account for the next airhead deal-of-the-decade. And there's always going to be another deal out there... for you.

If you think you did the right thing then you did.  Never lust after a bike, a boat, or a woman.  Well, OK, a bike or a boat, because there is always another one in the wings.

I'm sure you did the right thing.  $750 for a decent bike just seems too good to be true and there was probably some catch. You'd may have to spend at least that much again to get it really roadworthy, and after that, you probably would find an excuse to keep it.  (Not that there's anything wrong with that.  I'm really coming around to the idea that everyone needs at least two bikes.)
