Because of combined lack of experience and bad eyesight, my ability to identify a specific airhead at sight is generally limited to placing it in one of two groups: /2 and earlier, and /5 and later. Forget about my being able to identify displacement (unless the bike bears a displacement decal that I can read) or variations within a given size.
Has anyone run across a visual identification guide (flash cards or side-by-side photo chart) for airheads? It would be great to have something similar to the aircraft visual ID training aids that wartime flight crews, ground observers, and antiaircraft crews used to study. (A member of my local BMWMOA club supposedly was working on such a project for all BMWs, but I have no idea regarding its status. Besides, if completed and available, its scope would far exceed my interest or comprehension.)
