BMW G-series now made in CHINA
« on: July 10, 2008, 05:02:28 AM »
Here's a link that, well, you decide what you think about this.

"BMW have moved production of their G-series bikes to China, to take advantage of the lower production costs there. In fact, the single-cylinder engine used on the G650 range is actually manufactured by Loncin, a Chinese company that makes motorcycles, motorcycle engines and various motorcycle components."

Any guess as to how long it will be before we see BMWs being sold at Pep Boys?  :'(

Hmmmm... This ain't a good sign.   :-/  I wonder how long before we hear of more of the BMW product line heading over there?   The average worker in Germany earns in an hour what the average worker in China gets in a week.  You don't have to be a Phi Beta Kappa to do that kind of math.....

Kinda scary, but their price should be about 1/2 of that mentioned since it's being built in China...  10+ large for a Chinese motorcycle?  Not outa my wallet...

With over 50 years of practice building Chaing Jaings in China they should be getting pretty good at making BMWs by now.

Alot of practice making CJs, but that is still WWII (and earlier) technology and the metal that they make them from is "pot metal", at best.
A fellow near me has bought and tinkered with them, and the DNeprs.   If one replaces many of the parts of the CJ with parts from a DNepr
or URAL, you might have a semi-reliable vehicle in the end.

It continuously irritates me to see all sorts of big companies moving their production lines to China, and then the customers end up paying for it
with lousy quality - even if the prices come down somewhat.    The companies (whether it is human food, pet food, toothpaste, automobiles, etc)
should be held responsible for maintaining the level of quality of the products as they would be expected to do if the production plants were
maintained in the United States, or Europe, etc.   We shouldn't be expecting our governments to enforce these quality control standards - the companies
must be held responsible.  When they realize that they have to quintuple their safety and quality testing and inspections budgets, those possible cost savings
of moving production to China won't look too good in comparison.   And if the companies are held legally responsible for the product and any penalties/fines resulting, then they will be ALOT less eager to have everything moved to China and shipped back across the globe.

I wish BMW luck in this effort, cause I think that they are going to need it.  Unless they maintain their own staff on site to supervise procurement, operations and quality control, I think that the quality will suffer.  If it does, it won't take long for even hard-core BMW enthusiasts to avoid those
"CMW" bikes like the plague.

I bet that the Chinese could make stuff to any quality level desired.  I think the problem comes when the importer has stated the quality levels he wants, and then tries to negotiate price down afterwards.  I can't remember where I read that.

That is an important point, Ed.

In my experience, and many other engineers that I know who also must deal with the "why doesn't your design work since we
moved production to China ?" questions from the CEOs, it is in the nickel & diming process to try to get the deal in which things
usually go all to h-e-double hockeysticks.     The typical Chinese supplier doesn't want to lose out on a deal, so he will often
promise delivery of units at the very slimmest of profit margins.  The first articles for inspection will meet the quality levels desired.
But then as the crank turns and either the importer/wholesaler tries to squeeze a few more percent out of the mfgr, or when the mfgr's
costs go up for raw materials, they often get quite creative in finding ways to stretch a penny.  Literally.   They may not even realize
the potential consequences at the time either, but want to make sure that they deliver all 250,000 widgets that they promised by
the delivery date.
