So it's time to remove the top caps on the R65's forks to: 1) Measure spring length, 2) General inspection; 3) Tighten the big ol' Allen screws in the lower slider via a 13mm on a l-o-n-g extension; 4) refill with the spec 7.5 weight BMW fork oil,
I had installed new fork seals earlier and, luckily, was able to unscrew those monster Allen screws in the bottom of the forks without any trouble. Spent some time cleaning the lower sliders. See my post in the "Tech" area.
R65ers tech tips on the seal replacement job included growing a third hand... or convincing someone to help you. So, "Sweetie, are you busy?" Talked my bride into changing clothes and meeting me for a BMW 'tete-a-tete' in the garage.
We got the circlips out with her leaning on the Allen wrench while I fished out the clips. Did the chores. Come time to reinstall the caps, my wife returns to the garage and we successfully reinstall the first circlip and top cap. Cake.
"Honey..." sez wife. "Why does this one look different from the other one?"
Gear head me has put the aluminum cap in upside down. Oops. My bad.
Long story short, my wife was watching and learning while I was goofing up. I do feel like I've got a wife that can become a good Beemer wench...uh, that's wRench. As she tells her mother, "Monte always has to have a project."
