First Ride in Ohio
« on: March 11, 2007, 08:16:53 PM »
Tonight I took my '84 R65 up the street to the gas station to put a gallon of fresh fuel in her after a three month winter storage. It was a beautiful day here in Ohio (for March) and I debated whether to take her out or wait awhile. But they're calling for a high of 65 tomorrow and after seeing motorcycles out all day I couldn't take it anymore. So after dinner I took her off the Battery Tender, rolled her out into the drive and fired her up. Man, I missed that sound! The combination of relaxed rhythm and subdued growl that just lures you onto the seat. I pulled my motorcycle jacket out the the back of the closet, grabbed my helmet off the top shelf and headed out into the crisp evening air. After three months of reading endless motorcycle magazines (my favorite right now is Bike from Great Britain), it was quickly apparent that reading about motorcycles is a great way to pass the time in the winter months, but it doesn't hold a candle to actually riding a motorcycle. When I got home I pulled my GTI all the way into the garage and parked the beemer behind it, ready to go in the morning. I can only hope that I have the will-power to pull her off the road long enough to complete the paint work I have planned "before the riding season."

I hear you, Mightywind! (not sure about that handle of yours, however ;) )

A earlier post of mine, today:

I just got back from my first "real" ride of the year.  I did go out in January to get the speedometer tests with the GPS.  But today was sunny and almost warm!  I did leave the handlebar covers on, though, and I am glad I did!  It was still chilly.

It was just a commute run, though.  I had to go into work for an hour to set the mainframe clocks forward.

Came home and I have my oil draining now.  Something I normally do in the Fall, but Winter took so long to get here, it never got done!

BTW, I have purchased my ticket for Mid-Ohio races this summer.  Might be a good place for a R65.org get-together!

Yes, I was pointing out the details in the cartoons to my wife. Must be British humor. I'm enjoying the 12 Hours of Le Mons article right now, with the R100RS.

No, BIKE from Great Britain. They have these illustrations with their riding articles - overhead schematics of a road showing the correct riding lines, etc. - and there is always some interesting activities going on on the side of the road. Sometimes a bear eating someone, with blood and all, sometimes a police officer giving some poor naked guy "the shaft," literally. It's very funny, but a little warped. Not for young eyes for sure.

I thought that you got your handle from the folk music "spoof" move that came out a few years ago with Harry Shearer and the
gang that had done the previous rock&roll musical spook movie, Spinal Tap...   Is this right ?

Fairly entertaining, both of them, though I gotta admit I enjoyed Spinal Tap more (though I was also about 20 years younger)....

That would be it!  Believe it or not, I didn't see the movie, Spinal Tap until last summer for the first time!

Have you heard the band as The Folksmen, doing The Stones, Start Me Up?  WAY better than the original, let me tell ya!

Yes, you got me. I thought since I ride an airhead it was appropriate. I love those movies. Don't forget Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman, two other classics by the same group. Those people are talented and very funny.

I don't recall hearing that one, but it is somewhat of a spring ritual that I put on that Stones album and play "Start Me Up"
as a spiritual incentive as I wake the slumbering motorcycles (and lawn mowers) in the spring time from their winter's nap...

The Stones version is WAY LAME compared to this...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Mighty_Wind

I'm not a BIG Stones fan...and that (after going to YouTube for a reminder of what their version sounded like) is one of my least favorite Stones songs.  Not the songs fault, or the Stones.  Blame it on played-to-death radio...

If you like, I can email you a copy if you have broadband.

I would "let your fingers do the walking".
Call book stores like Barnes & Noble.
Check the yellow pages for magazine stores/news stands.

Are you near a major city?

Call first, save gas.
