Vegas and Mexico

Morning all,
Well, in a week, I leave Australia for the USA for a manic short holiday.
I leave Valentines day here, so I'll also get to LA for Valentines day.

I'm off on a double bucks party for two mates (with 6 others) to Vegas for four days (via Disneyland, staying treasure island) and then Puerto Verrata?? in Mexico for 6 days.

Anyway, within the mad-cap antics, I'm hoping to hire a bike and ride. Maybe a Harley -when in Rome.
 I hear riding out from Vegas to Hoover damn is well worth it. I wont have a lot of bike gear, but he day times aren't too cold are they ie 15 degrees Celsius???

In Mexico, I don't care if its a Honda Cub, I just want to run around.

Any recommendations for the trip, riding or not, most appreciated. I'll be paying this off forever, but what am I working for heh?

I googled "motorcycle rental las vegas" and got several hits.

The first one I clicked on doesn't look too bad.  $139 for one day.  Harleys only, from what I can tell.

I THOUGHT they had a very wide selection, including a few BMW's.  After looking at it closer, most of the models in Vegas are all H-D.  

Probably the thing that is going to kill you is insurance, and being from out-of-country you may need special insurance from Oz.  (I really don't know).

If you get a Harley, remember that it will probably have "feet-forward" ergonomics, which can be very disorienting.  And, of course, driving/riding on the opposite side of the road from what you are used to.

I don't know what the weather is doing there, right now, but again, just Google "weather 89118".  89118 is a "zip" (postal) zone for Las Vegas.

Good luck, have fun, and watch out for the old (and not-so-old) people in cages (cars).

Death Valley in February is a good ride, better than June, and about a 2.5-3 hour ride from Vegas. I think there is an Airheads event in Death Valley around that time ( Feb 16-18), Death Valley Rendezvous if memory serves me right. To contact the person arranging this outing, email Andrew Hartman, airheadpilot@hotmail.com. Average daytime high temp for Death Valley is 75 F. (24 C.) average low is 46 F. (8 C.). Average high temp for Vegas is 64 F. (18 C.), average low temp is 42 F. (6 C.). Just remember that after the sun sets, the temps drop pretty fast due to the dry air, and any rides to higher elevations will get you significantly lower temps at this time of year.

Even if you can't get a bike to ride, the view is just as great from a 'cage'. Motorcycleroads.us.com is a good site to find interesting roads in the US. If you want to check on the weather, weather.com, the Weather Channel here in the US, is a pretty good place to get info from.

Yes, you can rent Harleys and at least one rental place has BMWs in Las Vegas.
The Hoover dam is a relatively short ride out - probably take you less than an hour
out of Vegas unless traffic is really bad.   There are some very nice, and some
fairly challenging twisty roads to the north that wind into the canyons, but I can't recall
the route numbers..

Sounds like it should be a good trip !  Go easy on the water in Mexico if it isn't bottled, my mother in
law just got back from the Yucatan and had to deal with "Montezuma" the last few days..

My rule of thumb in Mexico is "Coca-Cola".

My father, being from Texas, had relatives on the border towns of Laredo and Eagle Pass.  I remember as a kid taking vacations there, and when we crossed the border it was such fun because we got to drink all the Coke we wanted!
