Changing lock on old style pannier
« on: September 28, 2019, 02:35:34 PM »
During my trip to the r65 LS/r80 GS rally I had a catastrophic failure of my left pannier frame. This resulted in the bag ending up on the hot muffler and consequent melting of that part of the bag (see attached photo).

I managed to find a replacement, but there was no key and the lock number was not the same as my original bag. I want to remove the locks from my original and put them on the replacement. Would anyone know what size pop rivet is used to attach this piece of hardware?

Many thanks in advance

Actually, BMW make a kit of needed rivets for their old set of locks. All the size and length needed are in the kit, so you just have to select the correct one.
If you already have a bunch of rivets, buying the kit make little sense, but if you do not have any but the rivet tool, this is the way to go.
BTW, a friend of mine repaired his suitcase using epoxy resin and glass mat cloth. He did a fine job of it and once painted black, difficult to see.
