Bit of an improvement for my side stand
« on: February 08, 2016, 02:06:05 PM »
For the entire time I owned my first BMW R100/7 the center and side stands  by far were a problem . Very soon after acquiring my R65 I had all the imperfections in the design of both the center stand and the side stand as some thing I was determined to make some small improvements on. My side stand was nonexistent , was able to hunt up all the parts for it , but its parked position was to far forward . Improved on that by welding the some what warn stop area so that it could not go so far past 90'' which lessons the lean angle a bit . To give it a larger foot print I made this pad cut from an old rear tire .
The center stand I both built up with weld the stops on the frame and did some welding on the center stand it self . It now goes just enough over center to be safely parked on the stand and is so much easier to get off the stand. I know about the aftermarket side and center stands just was not going to spend the money on them . I will be removing the extra length from the bolts on the side stand foot when I am sure it is going to stay secure .

The center stand on the early R65s, like your 1979 model, were designed with some weird geometry which Motorrad corrected a couple years later. The stands tended to be well past over-center and made them a hernia-inducing exercise.

My 1981 came with the notorious Civil War mini-ball on the boot step. Just terrible. Good ol' eBay provided a later, direct fit model center stand with a proper foot pad that made stand usage so much easier.

Those low profile NyLok nuts look suspiciously like the AN-series nuts stored in my aircraft hardware bins. Good choice. They ain't going anywhere.

You would be correct on the AN Nylocks . owned a 58 C182 still have box of hardware . Own a Paraglider motor that always needs , safety wire, loctite , and parts still fly off . Work at a Skydiving DZ five months a year so still around Aircraft maintenance stuff.
