Guide ring o-ring
« on: April 12, 2015, 09:46:22 AM »
I have an 83- R65 that needed the rear main seal and the oil pump o-ring.
I think it was the seal that was leaking but I am replacing both.
The question I have:  Is there an o-ring on the Guide ring?  The local shop looked at me like I was crazy when I asked for it.  I had gotten the part number from Snowbum's site and bought it.  Now I cannot tell if I can or how to remove the guide ring to see if there is a seal.

Any advice would be appreciated.  Here is a pic of what I am talking about

Thanks
Roy

Roy,

There is a guide tool available. Dan at Cycle Works comes to mind and is a solid Airhead supporter and supplier for special tools and parts.

Yes, the guide ring has an o-ring. Be sure to thoroughly clean the o-ring land.

Here's a link of my installation of the new replacement seal, guide ring o-ring and tool. Be sure to BLOCK the Crankshaft!

Roy,

The way I removed the guide (thrust) ring was to carefully tap it radially to get the bolt holes off-center enough to get a slide hammer on the inner lip of the guide (thrust) ring bolt holes.  Then carefully and lightly tapping it outward using small and alternating positions. No need to use a lot force, it will work free easily.  I have some photo comments in my link above, just below each photo.

Remember to block your crankshaft and keep things very clean here.

Mike -
Thanks for the info - ordered a tool from Cycle Works  - actually 2 tools one for the hub and one for the seal.   Played with it all day and just could not get myself to try and shift with a hammer.  I will let you know how it goes later this week.
Thanks

Okay - Have the Guide ring removed and the rear main seal out.  I need a little more advice on the reassembly.

I have replaced the Guide ring o-ring and ready to replace the seal.
From the pictures it looks like I want to replace the seal first then install the guide ring  - do I have that right?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Yes. Seal first.  Be sure to install the seal evenly.  There's a lot of conversation about seal depth.  Personally - I don't think it's critical as long as you take a conservative approach and it's not set too deep or proud of the engine casing.  I finally decided to set the seal depth where the new seals wiper was not at the existing contact point of the original seal on the guide ring.  You can normally see a visible wear mark or feel it with a fingernail.

You will notice the new seal is probably a bit different material and profile than the original.  I found setting the new seal depth the same as the depth of the original seal resulted in the new wiper to be in a slightly different position on the guide ring than the original which worked for me.

I've had no leaks for years.

Thanks!  Okay seal is in!  The flywheel and clutch carrier mounted.  Had a problem with them - the paint I used to mark them washed off when I cleaned them.  So i used the factory marks at 120° apart per Snowbum.
I guess we will see if that causes a problem.  I am not sure if I should worry, but of course I am.
