Parts resources - recommendations
« on: September 29, 2014, 02:58:35 PM »
Thanks to the R65 community for welcoming me last month. I'm on the trail of what could be a nice bike for me, but it hasn't been ridden in some time - 6 years - and in addition to fluids et,al, will need 1) steering bearing service; 2) new tires; 3) new shocks; 4) battery
and probably a whole host of other more minor items.

Can you kindly direct me to a resource or resources where I may be able to purchase the items above reasonably? I'm on a budget here...

Thanks!!!

Your first resource purchases should be both the Haynes and Clymer repair manuals for the R-series which includes your R65 model year - which you really should add to a sig line, your icon area or within your post. You'll gather more answers if we know what year model you're inquiring about. Both manuals can be found by searching on-line. Buy both as one manual may gloss over a topic where the other digs deeper. very important part of your tool chest.

Also, bookmark Snowbum's technical and repair website http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/

A local BMW dealer may be able to assist you with common bits such as spark plugs, crush washers, maybe oil filters. However, the Airhead bikes usually get short shrift at dealerships; some even refusing to work on them. If you can, avoid special ordering parts from the local dealer. You'll probably see something within 6-8 weeks.

For good Airhead parts availability:
Bob's BMW http://www.bobsbmw.com/
Max BMW http://maxbmwmotorcycles.com/
Motobins http://www.motobins.co.uk/ Yes, it's in England but delivery usually equals US dealer above
Motorworks BMW http://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Home/index.php England, again
Re-Cycle BMW http://re-psycle.com/

Airhead specialty tools:
Cycle Works http://www.cycleworks.net/

Shocks:
Hagon Shocks - Dave Quinn http://www.davequinnmotorcycles.com/

There's always eBay. But be advised, some Airhead parts may not fit the R65 series. Confirm before buying anything. If in doubt, ask here.

Thanks Monte, that list is very handy.

My experians with my local BMW a dealership is quite opposite to yours, the old macanic at the workshop was very helpfull and even helped me sorce some of the spares I needed for my restoration project.

Spares ordered at the dealer took 3 to 4 weeks to get to me, and then I discovered Motobins.
Parts ordered, from UK, was delivered in SA within 10 days from order!
Well done to Motobins!!!

A good resource that I use for parts is

Tom Cutter
Yardley, PA
www.RubberChickenRacingGarage.com

Tom is EXTREMELY knowledgeable and if you tell him what you have and what you are doing ....... he will make sure you order ALL the parts you will need for the job, not just the parts you THINK you will need. He will make sure to include the seal that he knows you will destroy when you disassemble.

I placed an order from Moto-Bins on Wednesday, the order was filled and shipped Thursday .
Saved about $200US, compared to what the local dealer charges and the order from the UK would get here sooner than BMW NA can get them to the local dealer .
'81 R65
'82 R65 LS
'84 R65 LS
'87 Moto Guzzi V65 Lario
'02 R1150R
Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Just wondered if you guys in the US of A face any import taxes as we do here if we buy from the USA.... import duty and VAT ??? we also have specialist European bike parts dealers here in the UK (on t tinternet ) who are cheaper than Motobins / Motorworks for many parts it does pay to shop around.

I've made some online purchases from the UK and Japan and no import duties have been charged so far .
Shipping charges for the latest Moto-Bins order, was $18US, no heavy parts in the order .
A $6US charge from the credit card company, for a foreign currency charge .
