r65 rear shock disassembly?

hey guys. I want to refurb my rear shocks, they still ride well but look shitty. How do I remove the coil from the strut? R65 '83

Do you have the OEM Boge shocks or what?

Yes. sorry. OEM BOGE shocks with the "handle" at bottom that you can twist.

You first have to compress the spring safely, then there is a flat close to the top of the damper rod so you can hold the rod still with an open ended spanner while unscrewing the top fitting.

They were installed only to keep the rear fender off the tire while the bike was in its shipping crate.
 
Several rear shock options out there that just might improve your scooter's handling without bustin' the budget. Are you planning a rechrome of the springs? What's the condition of the shock body, shaft and rubber mounting bushings? Have you investigated availability of new seals and bushings?

Shock itself is good. Re-chrome springs yes. Bushings shot, will need to find. Seals appear ok.

I have a sizeable chunk of my budget going towards buying a new tank + the Diode and ignition... I was hoping to refurb these springs, upgrade in future. But if not worth the refurb, then I guess I'll just "move" my budget a bit.

Chrome plating shops, due to strong EPA regulations, have become fewer. You may find some shiny new Boge springs for less money than the now high prices asked for plating work. FleaBay often has decent looking Boge shocks but the asking prices are often ridiculous. Be sure you know your spring's length and weight plus the overall shock eye-to-eye dimension. Shop wisely, Grasshopper.

I've a pair awaiting something to be put either in the waste bin or back to use ...

I actually had a hard time figuring out how to take these things apart but once I figured it out, its a very quick process... Look at a Fiche and see that the interior strut is screwed into the top mount... First step is to loosen the tension on the spring by rotating the handle to its lowest setting (use a bench vise and be careful). Once the tension is out you will need an open-ended wrench to grab the top of the strut and hold it still will you unscreen the top-mount (put a screw driver through the top mount for leverage). It will take some coercing but will eventually start to unscrew. That is really it, whole thing comes apart and you can proceed with polishing the metals and replacing bushings, etc... The spring itself I didnt do much to other then clean as much rust as possible. But I guess you could use a plasti-dip type thing to make them look good again (spring rate sucks on these so dont worry about messing that up).
Once your done just reverse the steps you did to take them apart and viola!

Thanks very much! Guest bedroom. Garage is full of wood working tools and sawdust. So with all this fresh paint and carpets soon to be replaced, the stars aligned. A/C doesn't hurt either since I live in FL and we are headed quickly into a hot summer.
