Decoking...

What are the thoughts on decoking the cylinder head, etc.  Seems like I've read mixed responses on results and expected benefits.
Thanks in advance...

The few times I've had an engine apart, I just use a plastic scraper to remove the combustion deposits on the cylinder head and piston  .

I don't know how true it is, but Chevron Techron is supposed to be good at removing valve and combustion chamber deposits with regular use .

How bad is it ? Some carbon build up is inevitable and unless it's bad it probably does more harm to our sensibilities that things should be clean than it does to the engine. Cleaning is still very satisfying if the heads are off for other reasons.

As far as cleaning suggestions, I've used carb cleaner and a dremel with a nylon brush wheel on pistons.  Works pretty well, just make sure to keep the deposits wet with cleaner.  I started a thread on it a while back.  Gasoline and detergent soaking solutions were also suggested.

However, unless you have a real problem from carbon buildup, such as pinging from increased compression or detonation from glowing carbon deposits, you'll probably notice no change in performance.  I'd save the cleaning for when you have head work to do.  If you're just doing a base gasket or pushrod seals I wouldn't bother unless you're jonesin to spend a few hours gettin dirty.

"How bad is it?"
That's hard for me to say, since I don't have much experience.  I can still see the arrow pointing toward the exhaust.  It has some obvious flakes that are caked on there.
I'm tempted to start at it, but I'm wondering if it's the sort of job that is satisfying, but doesn't really affect performance and then it just cakes on again in a matter of a few hundred miles.
